God I love this series.

With Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason jumping off Batman and Robin back in March, the only writer-artist team to have continued on this long together throughout the New 52 have been Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo on Batman. And it’s only fitting, because this team rocks.

I think we were all a bit surprised when we first saw the cover to this issue a while back, before Convergence. I mean, Robo-Bat Bunny, it’s a bit surprising. But once we all remembered that the people bringing us this new Batman were the same people who brought us The Court of Owls, Death of the Family, Zero Year, and most recently, Endgame, we put our trust back into them. And boy did it pan out well.

Not much to say in negatives for this issue. Snyder brilliantly paces the book, alternating between the present and the decisions leading up to the present. Bat-Bunny’s inner monologue differs from the Batman we all know and love’s, and reminds us that this isn’t Bruce Wayne anymore. There can be funny moments, and moments where our hero doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing. And that’s all right. The only slight criticism that keeps the writing from being spotless in my opinion was the end-of-issue plot twist. I felt that it could have been put off for a little bit, because this issue was great otherwise, and it would have been nice to not already begin going back to past loves (anyone who’s read the issue, I don’t think I need to explain any further).

Other than that, this issue was honestly perfect. Capullo/Miki/Plascencia seems like arguably the greatest art team in comics at this point, working off each other’s strengths seamlessly. Miki knows just when to go full dark on us, and Capullo has long ago understood that overly complicated art isn’t as nice as clear, precise lines. That being said, the true star of this comic, as he has been for me since he began working on the title, is FCO Plascencia. Definitely my favorite colorist in the industry right now, his color palette is the best, switching from gorgeous blues & oranges to dark, Batman-type colors on us. He is definitely my favorite part of the book, and even if Snyder and Capullo weren’t such beasts, I would probably continue to pull it just for Plascencia’s colors.

I salute you, Team Batman. Robo-Bat Bunny is freakin’ awesome.
