Synopsis:
This chapter opens with Commissioner Gordon showing his fellow police officers a picture of the sniper, but tells them that they don’t have much to go on. the gun is traced to a shipment stolen by the German Military six years ago and hasn’t been reported as used in other homicides. Gordon suggests that Thomas Wayne himself might have a motive to the ire of those around him. Then we cut to Batman roughing up an informant to get answers on how the German Military got a hold of those guns.
The Creative Team:
The always reliable Christos Gage crafts a Batman story unlike any other and this chapter delivers the goods on violence and action. He shows us a Bruce Wayne that questions his own motivations, maybe he’s more like his father than he thinks. The old cliché the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree is quoted in relation to how Bruce is reacting to the shooters victims, all former Thomas Wayne associates. The mystery thickens as we see the antagonists wiping out Arkham Asylum former employees that were there when Thomas Wayne was there. Great stuff includes the introduction of the villain The Black Spider. plus some kick ass fight scenes between Batman and the two antagonists. The one whose behind the killings is revealed, no spoilers here though.
Raffaele Lenco does a great job with the visuals. It’s dark and moody as a Batman tale should be. His grasp on the characters is so spot on , gritty and realistic, that we can see them interacting with real people. Highlights include Batman standing over the Arkham cemetery and, of course, the fight between Batman, Deadshot and Black Spider, which takes up most of the issue. The panels move smoothly and great attention to detail brings us the fast moving panels we action fans crave.
In Conclusion:
The best Batman stories always have an element of noir mystery and this one fulfills our expectations. Gage and Lenco are a dynamic duo all their own and the Batman’s deductive skills are on great display as he finally realizes where he has to go to discover the secret of the killer. Retracing his steps will take him back into the belly of the beast! **** (9.2 rating)
