- The truth behind the gauntlet Batman has been forced to run is revealed at last.
- Writer: Peter J. Tomasi; Artists: Doug Mahnke, Jaime Mendoza, Mark Irwin, David Baron, Rob Leigh
In the last issue Batman #998, Batman put on the Hellbat armor in order to aid Jason Blood who was being sucked dry by a green demon eerily similar to Venom once again. After, putting his life on the line to save his ally and stop the creature at any cost.  Bruce makes contact with Silas Stone, Cyborg“s father, in his office only to be blindsided by technology and led into yet another trap by a mysterious adversary, which appeared to be a little child dressed in a Batman costume.
In the latest issue Batman #999, we find out that the boy is actually Batman as a child. Bear with me. apparently every year Batman runs himself through a virtual reality program to runs as a gut check to see if he’s still able or wants to be Batman. So basically the last three or so issues never happened. But it was pretty interesting how his personal test was a big mystery that in order to solve Batman had to continues to find even more clues leading directly back to his origins.
The art in this issue is great but the story left me really confused. I don’t hate that I’m confused because we’re supposed to be confused and I enjoyed reading it. B;Doug Mahnke“s pencils, with assistance on inks courtesy of Jaime Mendoza and Mark Irwin, are impressive as always here. He captures the mood well;Colorist David Baron captures the right tones for Mahnke“s line work.
Detective Comics #999 features some revelations, but two-thirds of the book is taken up by a story that, ultimately, doesn’t factor in to the broader narrative much. It’s fun, well-drawn and well-written overall, but doesn’t feel as vital as previous chapters.
