Review: Ironheart 2020 #1

Before the current state of the world was set Marvel had set out on quite a few parallel storylines that promised to at some point intersect.  But it has been so long that I forgot about the whole AI robot versus human war. I forgot about the whole situation with Tony and his brother Arnold stock I forgot about the anti-superhero legislation that prohibits anyone under the age of 21 from being a superhero, to include Riri Williams as Ironheart.

Ironheart #1 2020 Is the 13th installment of the Ironman 2020 storyline. Riri while dealing with the everyday craziness that is her life Comes across an intern from Stark Unlimited who maybe utilizing company technology to conduct doing illicit activities. She confronts the intern, but he has zero humbleness to him and even claims that most of her work was stolen from his ideas. To make things even more complicated is that she wants to be able to settle things through the law and procedures but her A. I friend NATALIE wants to go in guns blazing and take him out herself.

Though it is nice to see RiRi occasionally, it is hard to see how this connects to the Ironman 2020 storyline. In fact, it feels more like a precautionary tale against technology. In fact, that feels like the purpose of this book was to 1st introduce the new character Andre Sims and kind of catches up with the characters in Riri’s life.  Overall though it does not feel like you need to pick up this book to get the gist of what is going on in the overall Ironman 2020 narrative. But what was perhaps the most distracting was some of the urban slang that was used, which usually is fine however some of the characters used slang there was retro to the 90s.

As for the interior art done by David Messina the panels were smooth good and clear. There were not any outstanding splash panels but that’s fine because it needed to concentrate on the characters and story anyways. I am a little disappointed in the character designs for Riri.  in the past she has been drawn comparatively to a Janelle Monáe (even on the cover). But here on the interior“s hair hairstyle and structure more comparative to some of the Old Town Studs.

Two out of five stars. I don’t want to bomb just title just yet; I actually want to see where this is going but I fear that it’s going do place where we’ve seen the same stuff time and again.  but that I mean a superhero versus her friends family and a superhero versus herself or her superpowers it’s been done I’d hate to see it be rejected specially with Riri“s background and intelligence I believe there is a lot more to explore in her background that would make this more interesting.  You know what’s even sadder is that before at least she she at least had the moniker of self-made or self-taught genius but now this title seems to be indicating that a lot of the technology that she built was actually stolen and this is not where I want to see this character go

Ironheart #1 2020 will have two covers by up and coming artists: Skan as the main cover artist; and Junggeun Yoon as the Cover B.
