REVIEW
This was a different comic that I usually get to review, because it’s not a comic book, it’s an art book! I love a good art book. They’re the perfect collector’s item, great conversation pieces and the best way to pay homage to the artists of the respective series. Mars Attacks is no exception.
Unlike most art collections that I’ve seen however, this one not only showcases the artists work, but we actually hear from them in one on one interviews talking about their art style, why they chose to be a part of the project, and about them being collectors themselves.
This book is full of Mars Attacks cards. Not like Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh cards that you would duel against someone with, but instead like classic baseball cards; meant for coveting and trading. Each card can be stand-alone or part of a set. (My personal favorite is the set by Dan Harding, creating an alien family posing for portrait. Each family member having their own card, yet the collecting set shows the whole family.) Each collection has its own story behind it, exactly like a rookie baseball card or postage stamp.
I like this collection the most because of its classic feel and tone. All of the artwork seems to have been done by hand, and digitized only for reproduction. I feel much honored to have just set my eyes upon such a timeless collection of aliens!
I would have like to have seen more variety within the book: Splash pages, black & whites, sketch ideas, different questions from to the artists in the interviews, etc. But overall, very good collection!
PS: Please don’t zap me!
