Review: Peter Porker The Spectacular Spider-Ham #1

Since Spider-Ham was canceled back in 1987, the best thing that Marvel Comics did to bringing him back  into visibility was to allow him to be utilized during the 2014 Spider-book event, Spider-Verse.

Spider-Ham as a property, still has some hills to climb though.  Peter Porker was simultaneously the most popular and the least popular character in the Spider-Verse film; Children couldn’t get enough of him, but the adults just don’t get him.

For the most part  the beginning of Peter Porker The Spectacular Spider-Ham is a rehash of Peter Porker’s origins.  Spider-Ham was born a spider, who lived in the basement lab of the goofy scientist May Porker. One of May’s inventions went weirdly wrong; she was trying to create the world’s first atomic hairdryer, believing that nuclear fusion would revolutionize the hair-care industry. Accidentally irradiating herself, she bit Peter, and his DNA was transformed. He became a cross between a spider and a pig, and soon took up crime-fighting as the spectacular Spider-Ham. In his civilian life, he works as a photographer for J. Jonah Jackal at The Daily Beagle.

The problem is that Spider-Ham is in denial about his place in the universe, and how his family and friends feel about him.  Where as he believes he has an Aunt that loves him, and a team that respects him, nothing could be further from the truth.

SCORE: 4 Stars out 5

Spider-Ham #1 will come with 4 different covers: Cover A Regular Wendell Dalit ; Cover B Regular
Variant Arthur Adams 8-Part Connecting;Cover C Incentive Will Robson Variant ;Cover D Incentive Inhyuk Lee Variant, which is probably the most promising.  All the Inhyuk Lee fans will be keeping an eye on this on, and I already been seeing indications that the opening interest is high.  I’m not sure I can trust LCS to offer 50 for the book .  For a 1:50 for a Peter Porker book, I’m leaning toward trying to secure my copies early and often.
