It seems that I am late to this particular party, as the book is 37 issues deep. Still, if you are dipping your toes in the water, you know that you are going to get your suit wet, you may as well jump straight in! After a battle with the Wasabi Wizard, Benito Burrito has lost the Sacred Spork, leaving him powerless. Without his connection to the Supreme, will he Benito get his powers back or is it time for someone else, something else to jump out of the fryer?
Written, with art, colors, inks and cover by Death Mark, this project is clearly a a work of love. Imagine the type of book with Earthworm Jim sensibilities, with Buzz Lightyear nuances and a penchant for fast food jokes. Taking the writing first; the book s clearly earmarked as a “funny book”. Fast food humour is practically on the menu in every panel of every page. If this level of humour isn’t for you, or if you get tired of all the filler but no thriller, then you will need to look elsewhere for your kicks. Death Mark maintains his raison d’etre throughout the book.
Death Mark’s art is full of cute characters that look just enough like the food stuffs you would expect to find in certain joints, though with the cartoony element dialled up to the “go large”option. Charm and cartoony wins the day for the characters, each bringing in their own personality. The colors are a kind of light and bright affair which sets up the humour theme well. As sole creator Death Mark has the luxury of planning his lettering around his art. This is a massive ask, given how the word count in places is quite surprising, which probably flies in the face of the fun book idea. I guess some punchlines need a really long setup.
If I am honest, this book is not my cup oof tea. I see the joke, I just don’t fins it funny. With that said, Death Mark clearly believes in his work, as well he should, as the production value is high and the humour is consistently on brand. Fans of slapstick, word play and food puns, will certainly get their fill here.

I am a long time comic book fan, being first introduced to Batman in the mid to late 70's. This led to a appreciation of classic artists like Neal Adams and Jim Aparo. Moving through the decades that followed, I have a working knowledge of a huge raft of characters with a fondness for old school characters like JSA and The Shadow
Currently reading a slew of Bat Books, enjoying a mini Marvel revival, and the host of The Definative Crusade and Outside the Panels whilst also appearing on No-Prize Podcast on the Undercover Capes Podcast Network
