Christopher Sebela and Tango revive Alex Raymond’s iconic investigator for a brand-new mystery hitting comic shops this November
Yo, crime comics fans, mystery junkies, and old-school newspaper strip heads, Mad Cave Studios just pulled one of the legendary detectives of the comics world back onto the case, and Rip Kirby is looking sharp as hell doing it.
Mad Cave Studios, in partnership with King Features Syndicate, has revealed a first look at RIP KIRBY #1, an all-new series bringing Alex Raymond’s influential private investigator back to comics on November 4, 2026.
Two-time Eisner Award nominee Christopher Sebela (High Crimes, Dead Letters) steps behind the typewriter, with Tango (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Archie Horror) handling the artwork, KJ Diaz on colors, and Jeff Eckleberry lettering the case files. Together, the creative team is digging into the DNA of one of comics’ earliest sophisticated detectives while building a fresh mystery around the world that made Rip Kirby an icon. And nah, Rip was never your average trench coat, cigarette, punch-first detective.
A war hero, athlete, scientist, intellectual, and private investigator, Kirby built his reputation by using observation, intelligence, scientific reasoning, and, when necessary, a good old-fashioned pair of fists. Now he’s enjoying the post-war boom of New York City alongside the quick-witted Honey Dorian and his reformed-criminal-turned-valet Desmond.
Life is good. Maybe too good. Rip’s carefully balanced world is beginning to crack as the city around him changes faster than anyone expected. His morals, his loyalty, and the straight-arrow code he has lived by are about to collide with a world becoming considerably uglier. Can a genuinely decent man survive without becoming part of the darkness he spends his life fighting? Yeah, Crusaders. Now you got our attention.
Sebela isn’t approaching the character like some dusty museum piece either. He sees Rip Kirby as a playground where mystery, romance, action, comedy, and thriller storytelling can all occupy the same neighborhood.
“Getting to write Rip Kirby has been a real dream. Not only am I writing detective stories, one of my favorite genres, I also get to write comedies, romances and thrillers at the same time.”
Sebela describes Kirby as an intellectual who fights crime almost for the change of pace, a loyal romantic, and a tough guy with enough heart to still believe the world can become better than he found it. Paired with the work from Tango, Diaz, and Eckleberry, the mission is clear: bring Rip Kirby back without sanding away everything that made him special in the first place.
For anybody unfamiliar with the name, here comes your comic history lesson without the dusty textbook energy. Alex Raymond and Ward Greene introduced Rip Kirby in 1946, creating a detective who immediately separated himself from many of the hard-boiled crime heroes dominating the era. Kirby relied heavily on intelligence, deduction, observation, and science rather than solving every disagreement by rearranging somebody’s dental work.
The approach helped redefine what a comic-strip detective could be, while Raymond’s artwork turned Rip Kirby into one of the most visually influential newspaper strips of its generation. The character would remain part of the comics landscape for decades, leaving fingerprints all over the crime and adventure genres. Now Mad Cave is opening another case file.
RIP KIRBY #1 hits comic shops November 4, 2026, with a Final Order Cutoff of October 12, 2026. The debut arrives with Cover A by Annie Wu, alongside Cover B, Cover C, Cover D, a foil edition, and a blank sketch cover, with additional details still to be revealed.
Classic character. New murder mystery. Post-war New York. A detective trying to remain a good man while the world around him gets increasingly complicated.
