From Puerto Rico to America: Bad Bunny Claims the Throne of Music Searches in Four States

Guitar enthusiast site Guitar Aficionado, analyzed Spotify streaming data to gauge the most streamed artists over the past year in the US then looked at which of these artists were the most searched for in each American state.

Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny is the people’s favorite in California, Texas, Nevada, and Florida, while Rock and Roll icon Elvis Presley ranked top in Arkansas, Kansas, New Mexico and his birth state of Mississippi.

Across America, Bad Bunny was searched 1.75 million times on average each month over the past year. In contrast, Elvis Presley receives 1.94 million searches per month on average.

Taylor Swift was found to be the number one artist in 31 states, including Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, and her home state of Pennsylvania to name but a few. The pop sensation, who is currently on the road for her ‘Eras’ tour, claimed the top spot as the most searched overall, with 2.43 million searches per month on average across America.

In second place, coming in as the most searched artist in seven states, is Rihanna. The Barbadian born singer receives a whopping 2.18 million searches every month on average across America, and is the most searched for artist in New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Louisiana, Maryland as well as North and South Carolina.

Tied in third place are two artists from completely different ends of the musical spectrum, ranking as the most searched in four states each.

Fourth place goes to the late rapper Takeoff. He was the top artist in the state of Alabama as well as Georgia, where he was born. Takeoff, who was also known for being one third of hip-hop trio, Migos, receives 1.4 million monthly searches on average in the US alone.

Rounding off the list in fifth place is a three-way tie between South Korean boyband BTS, Canadian rapper Drake, and country singer and songwriter Morgan Wallen, who were the most searched in one state each.

BTS were top in HawaiiDrake came top in Kentucky, and Morgan Wallen was most searched in West Virginia. On average these artists respectively receive 1.28 million, 1.12 million and 1.18 million searches per month on average across the US and narrowly manage to edge out the competition to be their respective state’s favorite artists.

Harry Styles was by far the biggest runner up, being the second most searched artist in 16 states, including California, Illinois, Colorado, and Massachusetts, to just name a few. Rihanna followed extremely close behind, being the second most searched in 14 states.

A spokesperson for Guitar Aficionado commented on the findings, saying:

“The popularity of different artists in America reflects the diverse musical interests and preferences of people from all walks of life. It highlights the significance of music in American culture as a form of expression and connection between individuals and communities.

“Interestingly, Taylor Swift dominates the rankings, solidifying her status as one of the most popular artists ever to come out of the United States.

“Not only is she the first American artist ever to have the top-selling album of the year five times in the US, she is also the first artist to claim each spot in the top ten Billboard’s Hot 100 Songs, following the release of her latest album ‘Midnights’ in October last year.”

Methodology

A list of artists was collected via scraping Spotify US charts over the last 12 months (artist and top tracks). The first and second listed artists were collected from the official Spotify API for top US tracks. This data was then input into Google Keyword Planner to determine each artist’s average monthly search volume in each state.
