When video games based on comic books actually delivered

The comic book community that listens to podcasts and posts on forums is huge. However, while opinions tend to vary among comic book lovers when it comes to the finest comics ever, the general consensus remains that most video games based on comic books are forgettable. However, there have been some exceptions.

Of course, it isn’t easy creating a comic book-inspired release that is expected to top the gaming charts. After all, almost everyone is playing diverse titles like Candy Crush Saga and live roulette these days, making it hard to stand out in a saturated gaming space. Luckily, though, comic book fans have been treated to some top-notch video games, with fans of the likes of Marvel and DC being catered to.

So, with a plethora of unforgettable gaming releases, below we highlight the comic book-themed video games that actually managed to deliver something worthwhile to experience. We can’t feature them all, but below is a brief look at some titles that were generally endorsed by the comic book community.

The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction

One for more senior members of the comic book fraternity to recall, The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction is a 2005 release that received a number of plaudits among the PS2, GameCube, and Xbox communities when it came to the fore. Hulk is a character that is perfectly suited to the gaming category anyway, although he hasn’t always been treated with the respect such a formidable beast truly deserves. However, The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction bucked the trend, as Bruce Banner appeared in all his glory and caused the type of destruction gamers and comic book enthusiasts alike would expect. An extremely fun game to play, The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction is iconic.

The Wolf Among Us

In case you aren’t aware, The Wolf Among Us is actually based on a rare comic book series. It was a special game of the same name, too. In this one, the sheriff of Fabletown, called Bigby Wolf, is the character players took control of while immersing themselves in this wonderfully mysterious fantasy land.

Lego Batman

Batman has always had serious business to attend to, but Lego Batman did a remarkable job of bringing some comical value to proceedings. An iconic character both comic book lovers and movie fans adore, Batman has transitioned over to the gaming sphere in a successful manner in numerous titles. Lego Batman is most definitely one of them, as gamers couldn’t resist teaming up with Robin in this Lego-themed favorite. With chaos to cause and Arkham to flee from, Lego Batman is a 2008 title many comic book fanatics fondly remember.

Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy

In the same way, the various movies have been well received, Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy is a gaming title that console gamers are still sampling. Released in 2021 on prominent gaming platforms like PC and PlayStation, it’s a truly stunning offering containing some instantly recognizable heroes and villains. Taking on the role of Peter Quill, it’s up to you to smash through various missions and reign supreme in epic battles. With tough decisions to make along the way, playing as Star-Lord has never felt so special.

The Walking Dead

We’ve seen a few games based on The Walking Dead, although Telltale’s The Walking Dead actually managed to win awards. Featuring the hordes of zombies and warring factions seen in the shows and comic books, this 2018 release follows Lee Everett on a terrifying journey. With Clementine to care for and surviving and thriving being the aim in this one, The Walking Dead is a highly engaging release.
