“Social Studies” is a semi-autobiographical comic series based on the lives of its own creators, Mike Virgilio and Adam Gagnon. Drawing from their real life experiences brings a unique voice to the comic book. The experiences are boiled down to real human moments to provide growth for the characters found within the pages as well as broadens the stories to capture the universal High School experience. This slice-of-life comic takes the whirl-wind High School existence and jams it through the prism of the 90’s cartoons the creator’s grew up with.
While the characters are based on the creators and those who have impacted their lives, the character personalities are splintered. Instead of basing a certain character on a specific person, the characters are all amalgamations of personality types. Drawing into personality traits rather than people makes for a much more open, honest, and approachable story for all Social Studies readers.
Social Studies is created and co-written by Mike Virgilio and Adam Gagnon. The two met in 1999 while they were in the 9th grade in the massive Shenendehowa School District. The two became best friends instantly, bonding over drawing, video games, Star Wars, Aliens, and other classic movies that defined an era. In the middle of their sophomore year, Mike moved to Paris with his family. Despite the two never living in the same area again, they remain close friends. Working on Social Studies has given them the opportunity to relive their memories and face their teenage selves.
Being such a personal project, everything is done ‘in house’. The writing, layouts, penciling, inking, coloring, lettering, distribution, and marketing. The look of Social Studies has been obsessively worked. Story is important, of course, but this is a comic book. Art is a key piece and Social Studies stands out with it’s modern clean look. Every page is uniquely hand drawn and colored.
