Kickstarter Alert: Fabled Four #2
The FF are back in their second issue. Now before you roll your eyes, I am not talking about the Fantastic Four; this is the Fabled Four who are back back for more skull-dungeonery as their quest continues. But in every quest, a solider may be lost and it is time for the immortal cry of “next pixel character up!”
Sam and his gang are out to make a name for themselves, albeit not always a good name if you listen to the local barflies. Still it’s a name nonetheless. With questing on the line there is a need for stronger magic, even if stronger magic means deadlier ramifications, the lure of gold, goblets and free beer casts an stronger spell!
Co-creator and writer Jamie Me continues to mix the vagaries and stylings of both D&D and pixel games of the past with slices of real life thrown in for good measure. It’s this sort of relatable elements, with a gang that can feel like the guys from The Big Bang Theory that actually adds humour to proceedings, working hard to overcome any lack of D&D knowledge or understanding in the reader. Whichever of the influences you prefer, the combined might of all them is stronger than a broadsword made of elven metal, forged the stomach of a fire breathing dragon!
The art is again provided by co-creator Luke Summerscales who maintains the look and feel of the previous book. For an art style that could be seen as basic, Summerscales does well to give the characters a sense of life, that expands the enjoyment, given some to the crazy situations Sam’s gang find themselves in. There is even time for some well placed situational, slapstick moments showing the versatility of this old school style and Summerscales’ ingenuity. Finally, keeping the pixel vibe going is the lettering by the final co-creator Jonathan Carter who ensures that the vibe of the book maintained. Holding the thing together, ensuring continuity and maybe trying not to laugh too hard whilst being constructive is editor Archie Dait.
Jamie Me’s credentials are certainly on the rise, specialising it seems in getting Kickstarter’s backed. This is due to his honesty, hard work and the quality of the product that he creates. It’s great to see Me work with others in an effort to further develop their comic book stories. Check out Fabled Four for a quest that truly outgrows its D&D, computer game stance of yesteryear!
