The book follows Joshua Caldwell, a teenager from rural Appalachia who becomes an overnight sensation by uploading his nightmares to a platform powered by dream-recording technology. What starts as a shot at escape becomes something darker, messier, and way more dangerous once fame, corporate attention, and the public appetite for private pain get involved.
Ben and Al dig into the book’s central idea—the monetization of dreams—and why the premise feels uncomfortably close to the reality of the creator economy. They also discuss why real places matter in high-concept storytelling, how Appalachia grounds the series emotionally, and what makes Dream Feeds such a sharp example of body horror for the algorithm era. Dream Feeds is also a milestone release for the This Is It imprint, marking the label’s third title after Translunar and Frontierra.
The episode also shines a light on the book’s stunning physical craft. Artist Dalts Dalton hand-inks pages on large-format paper, with some sequences built through collage, giving the comic a rough, visceral quality that fits the story’s emotional danger.
