HBO JUST CAST DOBBY, TOM RIDDLE AND A NEW GINNY BEFORE HARRY POTTER SEASON 1 EVEN PREMIERES!

HBO has officially found its new Dobby, teenage Tom Riddle and Ginny Weasley for Season 2 of Harry Potter, and yes, we are already talking Chamber of Secrets before Season 1 has even premiered.

Okay, Crusaders, I need everyone to appreciate how wild this is for a second. We have not even properly moved into Hogwarts yet, and HBO is already opening the Chamber of Secrets. As someone who loves fantasy worlds, dramatic reveals and characters who look adorable right before bringing absolute chaos into your life, the Dobby casting alone immediately had my attention.

HBO has announced that Lenny Rush will play Dobby, Billy Barratt will portray the teenage Tom Riddle and Bonnie Hill will step into the role of Ginny Weasley for Season 2 of its new Harry Potter series. Season 1 has wrapped production and is scheduled to premiere December 25, while the second season is already in pre-production at Leavesden Studios outside London, according to Variety.

That is a pretty major show of confidence from HBO. They are not waiting around to see whether everybody falls in love with the new Harry, Ron and Hermione first. They are already building the next chapter, and honestly, Chamber of Secrets is where this world starts getting darker, stranger and much more emotionally complicated. Cute magical-school energy? Still there. Giant snake, possessed diary and a child being manipulated by the memory of a future dark wizard? Also there. My horror-girl side is listening.

Dobby is one of those characters where the performance has to be so much more than the visual effects. Toby Jones gave the original movie version that instantly recognizable voice, but HBO has not revealed exactly how Lenny Rush will portray the house-elf. We do not know yet whether this will involve voice work, performance capture or some combination of techniques.

Whatever they choose, Rush has a deceptively difficult job. Dobby is funny and lovable, but he is also anxious, impulsive and occasionally a tiny walking disaster. He can make you laugh and then completely break your heart. If the new series wants this version to stand on its own, Rush needs room to create a Dobby rather than simply imitate the one audiences already know.

Rush is a really interesting choice for exactly that reason. His work on Am I Being Unreasonable? showed that he can handle comedy without losing the emotional reality underneath it, and that balance feels perfect for a character like Dobby.

Then we have Billy Barratt as teenage Tom Riddle, and this casting might be the one I am watching most closely. Barratt became the youngest winner of an International Emmy acting award for Responsible Child, so HBO is putting a serious young performer behind one of the story’s most important villains.

The thing about Tom Riddle is that he should not walk into the story screaming, “Hi, I am obviously evil.” He is intelligent, composed and charming enough that Harry wants to believe him. That is what makes the diary storyline work. The danger comes dressed as someone helpful and trustworthy, which is so much creepier than simply giving us a villain with dramatic lighting and sinister music.

If Barratt can make Riddle genuinely magnetic before letting that darkness slowly show itself, Chamber of Secrets could lean into the psychological-horror side of the story in a way the longer television format is perfectly suited for. Give me the beautiful, unsettling slow burn. I am ready.

Bonnie Hill will take over as Ginny Weasley after Season 1 performer Gracie Cochrane stepped away from the role due to what her family described as unforeseen circumstances. HBO previously expressed support for Cochrane and her family’s decision, so there is no reason for anyone to turn that into internet detective work.

What makes Hill’s casting especially important is the timing. Ginny may have a smaller presence at the beginning of the story, but Chamber of Secrets puts her right at the emotional center of everything. She is lonely, vulnerable and being manipulated without fully understanding what is happening to her. That requires much more than simply being “Ron’s little sister.”

I really hope the series gives Ginny the space to feel like a complete person here. This is frightening material when you actually think about what she experiences, and Hill has the opportunity to establish her own version of Ginny during one of the character’s most important chapters instead of spending an entire season living in somebody else’s shadow.

Rush, Barratt and Hill join a growing cast led by Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. John Lithgow plays Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer is Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu portrays Severus Snape and Nick Frost takes on Rubeus Hagrid. Francesca Gardiner writes and executive produces the series, with Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes and executive producing.

The talent is absolutely there, but that does not automatically make this remake necessary or successful. The original films are deeply attached to people’s childhoods, and fans are going to notice everything, from costumes and creature designs to whether a favorite character feels emotionally right. HBO has a lot to prove, especially when it is asking audiences to fall in love with new versions of characters they have known for decades.

Still, I like that these Season 2 choices suggest they are thinking about performance and character rather than simply chasing the most obvious names. Dobby needs heart. Riddle needs charm hiding something horrible. Ginny needs vulnerability without becoming helpless. If HBO gets those three things right, Chamber of Secrets could be where this new adaptation really starts developing an identity of its own.

So yes, I am curious. I am cautiously excited. And I am absolutely judging Dobby the second he appears because that little chaos elf has standards to live up to. Season 1 arrives this Christmas, but apparently HBO already has one hand on Tom Riddle’s diary. Nothing bad ever happens after somebody opens that, right?
