REVIEW: Dr. Strange #384

Synopsis:

Dr. Strange, although beating every other Sorcerer for the title of Sorcerer Supreme, was made to step aside by the Vishanti because he’s not immortal. The new Sorcerer Supreme…Loki! Yes, the god of mischief, has taken Stephen Strange’s place. Initially, Strange accepted his demotion (though not without a fight.) But now, it seems that Loki is seeking a special spell that will transfer all the worlds magic to him! The closer Loki gets to Zelma Stanton, Strange’s former apprentice, the closer he gets to finding the secret spell he needs. Dr. Strange must stop Loki before he becomes all-powerful!

The Creative Team:

Donny Cates keeps our protagonists hands full this issue. The chapter begins with our good doctor throwing a rock through Loki’s window to get his attention. He demands that Loki leave his house and when Loki refuses he unleashes the power of Yggdrasil, of Asgard, against Odin’s other son. Can a stranger to Asgard actually wield the power of the gods against one of their own? Cates keeps us guessing as to who is the stronger Warlock and if Strange can actually use the power of Loki’s home against him. The twist surprise element is a good one, even when Zelma thinks that she’s taken control of the situation, it doesn’t look good for Dr. Strange! Great Stuff!

Gabriel Hernandez Walta brings this tale of wizardry gone amuck home with grace and style, his splash pages bring Loki’s threats to the forefront, even when we think Strange has taken the upper hand. My favorite splash is when Strange, who has just destroyed his house to get to Loki, says “Get the Hell out of my house.” He’s even dressed as a quasi Jesus type, I guess in an attempt at intimidation.

In Conclusion:

Stephen Strange brings this fight home when his anger against Loki reaches its peak. Loki acts like Strange is nothing more than a nuisance. And the level of destruction these two cause as they play out their power trip is incomprehensible. A great issue that takes us to another dimension of magic as only Mighty Marvel can tell the tale. Just when Loki thinks he’s gained the upper hand… to be continued. ***1/2 (8.8 rating)
