REVIEW: Scarlett Couture: The Munich File – Part One

They say that timing is everything.  As the new breaks that there will be a new female 007, Des Taylor“s sexy and sassy spy-heroine, Scarlett Couture is back in a new miniseries.  This time though, she is more than going through the motions!

Set 6 months after”“Project Stardust”“ Scarlett Carver and her team are on the hunt for clues that will ultimately lead them to LANDON, a computer system designed to circumnavigate any security system in the world.  In the wrong hands, this piece of software could influence governments, serve organised crime or even siphon of funds and assets from Chase Couture“s business empire.  A dangerous tool indeed.

Writer/artist/creator Des Taylor, following the success of his previous Scarlett Couture books, published by Titan Books, has taken a bold storytelling decision; rather than keep the action tied to the comic book page, the new book has been made for the Madefire Motion Book platform.  The Madefire app is available for free from the App Store on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch or at www.madefire.com/iOS, and on Android via the Google Play store.  Now before any “true comic fans”“ get there social commentary in a twist, let“s examine both the impact and implications of the decision.

Firstly, there is the style of the book.  Taylor is renowned for the stylish almost retro feel he brings to his and others (go check out @despopart on Twitter for example) characters.  Simple elegant lines catch and draw the reader into the panel.  Secondly, Scarlett Couture is a spy book and for that to work there needs to be action.  Not resting on his laurels, Taylor has looked to deliver the same look and animated feel from previous issues to this current series.  Therefore, a motion book seems the logical choice.  In taking this path, Taylor has shown what an animated version of Scarlett Couture could look like.  The dialogue works well, carrying both the panic or stress of the early chase sequence all the way to the ramifications of LANDON.

So this is a little different to your regular comic book.  There are sounds, music, gunfire and a sultry intro all added into the mix to give you an immersive experience.  At first it is a tad tricky, not knowing what to expect.  But eventually you get the hang of it and despite all the noise and added bits, there is still the fun of reading the comic.  SCARLETT COUTURE- THE MUNICH FILE Issue’s 1 and 2 will be released together in July at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, with Issues 3 and 4 following in November with the ART OF SCARLETT COUTURE sketchbook.

I am a long time comic book fan, being first introduced to Batman in the mid to late 70's. This led to a appreciation of classic artists like Neal Adams and Jim Aparo. Moving through the decades that followed, I have a working knowledge of a huge raft of characters with a fondness for old school characters like JSA and The Shadow

Currently reading a slew of Bat Books, enjoying a mini Marvel revival, and the host of The Definative Crusade and Outside the Panels whilst also appearing on No-Prize Podcast on the Undercover Capes Podcast Network
