Review: Zener #0

You want to know why I love Indie comic book publishers so much? It’s because not only do you have a small group of people who are willing to sacrifice their time and resources for something they love but, you get someone who is putting their talent and reputation on the line as well such as NRG Comics Editor-In-Chief, Web Bleynat.

The Zenner # 0  story is a Science-Fiction/Superhero genre that follows the adventures of a young  Diego Reyes: A Latino/African American student, who“s amusement with the superhero genre has begun to fade, due to the fact that they live in a world with an actual Superhero, but the closest one they have is in the next city over. Well his world is about to change after a night out with his girlfriend, Sasha, because it turns out that Indigo Valley has its own superhero in a guy named Savatore aka Zener,  Unfortunately, they meet under horrible circumstances as a accidentally got caught in the middle of a fight between Zenner and a creature are tearing Indigo Valley apart.

So far I was pretty impressed with some of the literary devices, used in the narrative so far.  Bleynat definitely put on a clinic how how to introduce character, world build, all the while building a mystery tease and incentives the reader to want to know what happens next.  If he can promise me that in future issues: The good guys won’t always win, versus they just walk away from a fight with a dirt stained cheek.  I feel like Bleynat gets it.  There should be a human cost will be accounted for afterwards”¦people get hurt and people die

The art by Juan Paolo Mananita was simple, and generic, yet he got his money’s worth out of it, focusing not on the lines and characters but what was happening to those characters.  The design of the main super hero is, just okay (Though I do wonder if that’s on purpose) . Not 100% cosplayable but at least it is distinctive; But I am very much in doubt of the practicality of the big purple beads around his waist.  The background environment Indigo Valley, or what was left of it was very adept at showing the scale of the national disaster that was happening, as you can see the infrastructure crumbling before it even reaches the panel.  The Diego Reyes character, looks like a manga character that was just colored brown and with braids added on for after effect, but that totally doesn’t matter because the panels that he get’s are amazing.  The villain was probably the most intriguing, as a big purple creature that“s part Boar, part goat, part Scorpion, part Unicorn all parts terrifying.

SCORE: 3.5 Stars out 5.

I based this score on how far can this story go?  I just don’t have faith that mainstream audiences will find the character designs as amusing as I do, but I still feel it can go pretty far. Zener has already started connecting to the other comics in the NRG universe like Empress, and most likely the Psyborg character will be unveiled soon.  Yet The action panels and the after-math scenes are the most enticing thing about the comic.

The Zener Comic is available to read online through different formats… but the readers who liked as much as I did can support it through patreon.com/NRGcomic
