BCAF Brings the Summer Comics Heat With Boston Reads Comics Featuring Raúl the Third’s The Snips!

WEPA, Boston families, this is the kind of summer reading energy we love to see!

The Boston Comic Arts Foundation is back with the second year of Boston Reads Comics, a citywide celebration built around one beautiful mission: getting kids, families, and readers of all ages excited about comics. Because let’s be real, comics are not just books with pictures. Comics are imagination with sneakers on.

This July, BCAF is challenging Boston kids and families to pick up The Snips by beloved local creator Raúl the Third, a fun, action-packed graphic novel introducing a brand-new superhero team. Big adventure. Big personality. Big kid-friendly comic book joy.

Raúl the Third is a four-time Pura Belpré Award-winning illustrator, author, and artist based in the Boston area with his wife, colorist Elaine Bay. He is known for the critically acclaimed Low Riders in Space series and the World of ¡Vamos! books, with work rooted in the contemporary Mexican American experience and memories of growing up between El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico.

The celebration wraps up on Saturday, July 11th at the BPL Central Library from 1pm to 4pm, with drawing activities, a silent read-along, and a talk with Raúl the Third. Translation: bring the kids, bring the curiosity, and bring that summer comics spirit. This is THE kids comics event to check out in Boston this summer.

BCAF Executive Director Shelli Paroline says, “Don’t you love it when you read a great book and then you run into someone else who has read it too? Boston Reads Comics is all about spreading that feeling of instant friendship to readers of all ages in our city. This book by a local author is perfect for sparking lots of exciting conversations.”

The Boston Comic Arts Foundation builds community through comics, championing the power of the medium to inspire, educate, and bring people together. Through annual festivals, monthly Picture + Panel events, author grants, and advocacy for comics as a creative format, BCAF continues to create spaces where readers and creators can connect, grow, and share the magic of sequential storytelling.
