Bixby Grant: Fangs & Brimstone #5 Brings Supernatural Detective Chaos Back to Kickstarter
·Al Mega

Fam, some detectives chase murderers, some chase missing persons, and then there’s Bixby Grant, who’s apparently having the worst damn family reunion in comic book history! Demonic cults, pissed-off goblins, vampires, zombies, and enough emotional baggage to fill a moving truck. Welcome back to Harbor City, where the supernatural doesn’t take a day off and neither does the madness! BIXBY GRANT, PRIVATE EYE: FANGS & BRIMSTONE #5 is officially live on Kickstarter, and creator Patrick Coyle is bringing this six-part supernatural crime saga one step closer to its explosive conclusion.
Coyle, co-founder of the pioneering online comics publisher Komikwerks, is back with artist Gonzalo Martínez, colorist Arthur Hesli (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers), and GLAAD and Eisner Award-winning editor Heather Antos. The team is serving up another round of supernatural detective action with the kind of pulpy attitude that makes you want to throw on a trench coat, grab a coffee, and immediately regret walking into the wrong alley. This issue also brings back Zombietown, illustrated by Gonzalo Ruggieri, with Coyle handling lettering on both stories.
Our boy Bix has been following the trail of his long-lost brother Max’s ancient dagger, which sounds like a terrible idea already, and now he’s stuck beneath Harbor City with Diego, a rockabilly vampire, surrounded by a demonic cult looking to unleash literal hell on Earth. Naturally, things go from bad to worse when the two get captured and tossed into a dungeon full of monstrous troublemakers. The real headache? Bix has to deal with his unresolved feelings toward his evil brother while trying not to become goblin chow. Family therapy would’ve been cheaper, brother!

The 32-page comic delivers 20 pages of Fangs & Brimstone alongside an eight-page installment of Zombietown, and that backup isn’t exactly taking it easy either. Detective Maritza Ramirez is deep inside Harbor City’s undead district, a five-block nightmare populated by thousands of zombies, searching for answers about her missing father, Police Captain Jorge Ramirez. Unfortunately, she’s crossed paths with Don Scarpino, the undead boss of a zombie crime syndicate called Il Cosa Muerte. A zombie mafia? Fam, these dudes apparently took organized crime way too literally!
Maritza’s situation gets even uglier when Scarpino forces her to confront her worst fears, and her zombie-proof suit ends up damaged. Now she’s stuck trying to survive a neighborhood where the residents don’t exactly respect personal space, especially when dinner walks through the front door. Between the police corruption, undead gangsters, and supernatural insanity, Harbor City is making Gotham look like a reasonable place to raise a family.
Let’s talk about these covers because the creative team isn’t playing around. Veronica Fish and the incredible Francesco Francavilla are contributing variant covers, while veteran character designer and storyboard artist Coran Kizer Stone brings something extra nasty to the party with a 3D lenticular cover. That special edition is limited to just 25 copies and was offered as an Early Bird reward during the campaign’s first 48 hours. Twenty-five copies, fam! That’s the kind of collectible that’ll have somebody refreshing Kickstarter like they’re trying to score concert tickets.

Coyle says the story is heading into its final act, and he’s particularly excited about digging deeper into Bix’s emotional trauma and mental health while revealing the story’s true villain. I dig that approach because beneath all the monsters and supernatural chaos, there’s an actual character wrestling with some heavy personal demons. The literal demons are just making the situation considerably worse! Coyle also expressed how thrilled he is with Stone’s lenticular artwork, marking the first time the series has featured a 3D cover.
For anybody jumping aboard, Fangs & Brimstone follows the standalone graphic novel Bixby Grant, Private Eye: Wolf, She Cried, mixing old-school detective fiction with supernatural horror, dry humor, and some good old-fashioned two-fisted action. If your comic book diet includes Hellboy, The Spirit, Batman: The Animated Series, or The Goon, there’s definitely something here worth checking out. That combination of noir atmosphere, bizarre characters, and monsters behaving like everyday criminals is exactly the kind of weird indie creativity I enjoy seeing.
Here’s where I give the independent comic book community its flowers. Projects like this don’t have massive corporate marketing machines throwing money around to get your attention. They’ve got creators putting in the hours, building their audiences, and hoping readers show up to support the work. Patrick Coyle and his team are five issues deep into a six-part story, and getting this close to the finish line takes dedication. That’s why I keep telling people to explore beyond the usual superhero shelves. There are some seriously entertaining stories happening out there, and plenty of them deserve more eyeballs.
The Kickstarter campaign for Bixby Grant, Private Eye: Fangs & Brimstone #5 runs through November 12, 2026, featuring new covers, exclusive rewards, and the latest chapters of both Fangs & Brimstone and Zombietown. If supernatural detective stories, zombie mobsters, and dysfunctional family drama sound like your kind of madness, head over to the campaign, check out the rewards, and see whether this comic belongs in your collection.
