Marvel Heroes by Gene Colan Artist’s Edition Brings Legendary Marvel Artwork Back in 2027

·Al Mega

Fam, some comic book artists draw superheroes, and then you got legends like Gene Colan who made those characters feel like they were breathing right off the damn page. The man could make Daredevil move like nobody else, turn Doctor Strange into a psychedelic nightmare, and give Captain America the kind of dramatic presence that made you stop flipping pages just to appreciate the artwork. Now Scott Dunbier’s Act 4 Publishing and Skybound are bringing that magic back with Marvel Heroes by Gene Colan Artist’s Edition, a massive hardcover arriving in comic shops April 7, 2027.

We’re talking 176 pages in a ridiculous 12-by-17-inch format, because apparently regular-sized books just ain’t worthy of this man’s talent. The collection celebrates Colan’s legendary Marvel run with artwork featuring Captain America, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, Howard the Duck and more. You also get stories written by Stan Lee, Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas, with Colan’s pencils brought to life through inks by Bill Everett, Tom Palmer, Joe Sinnott and other talented hands who helped define Marvel’s golden years of storytelling.

Now here’s where the comic history heads are gonna start reaching for their wallets. This beast includes three complete stories: Captain America #137, Daredevil #63 and Tales of Suspense #97 featuring Iron Man. We’re talking classic Marvel storytelling from an era when artists had to make every panel count, without digital shortcuts or somebody fixing everything with a mouse. They’re even throwing in two foldouts showcasing four original twice-up oversized covers, because clearly somebody at Act 4 understands that comic collectors enjoy having absolutely no shelf space left.

For anybody unfamiliar with Artist’s Editions, these ain’t your typical reprint collections. The original artwork gets scanned in full color and reproduced at its actual size, meaning you can see the blue pencil marks, ink washes, corrections and all those little details that disappear when comics hit the printing press. It’s about as close as most of us will ever get to sitting in front of Colan’s original pages without having to refinance the house to buy one.

Scott Dunbier knows exactly whose work he’s handling here, having previously curated a Gene Colan Artist’s Edition dedicated entirely to Tomb of Dracula. That book has been out of print for years and now commands serious money on the secondary market, which should tell collectors something about waiting too long. Dunbier called Colan one of Marvel’s core artists for decades, praising his distinctive storytelling and the incredible artwork featured in this new collection.

This release also keeps the Act 4 Publishing and Skybound partnership moving with a lineup that comic art junkies should definitely have on their radar. Upcoming projects include Jason Pearson’s Body Bags Artist’s Edition, DC Silver Age Covers and Stories Artist’s Edition, Circus of Bones: The Art of Mike Mignola, Beta Ray Bill by Daniel Warren Johnson Artist’s Edition and J. Scott Campbell’s Danger Girl Artist’s Edition. That’s a whole lot of legendary artwork heading toward collectors’ shelves, and somebody better start selling reinforced bookcases.

Marvel Heroes by Gene Colan Artist’s Edition carries a $150 price tag and arrives in comic shops April 7, 2027, followed by bookstores May 4, 2027. Yeah, $150 ain’t exactly pocket change, especially when your weekly comic pull list already looks like a car payment. Still, for fans who appreciate the craftsmanship behind these legendary Marvel characters, getting to study Colan’s work at its original size is a different experience from reading another standard reprint.

Gene Colan helped build the visual language of Marvel Comics, and his work deserves to be appreciated beyond a tiny panel on a glossy page. This collection gives longtime fans a chance to revisit that history while introducing newer readers to an artist whose storytelling still holds its own decades later. Just do yourself a favor and clear some space before April, because this monster ain’t fitting between your regular trades.
