Charisma #1 Turns Influencer Fame Into a Superhero Reckoning on Kickstarter

WEPAAAA! What happens when the world’s hottest influencer gets superpowers and discovers millions of followers still cannot save you from your own mistakes? That is the hook behind Charisma #1: #LuckyCharms, the newest addition to the growing Glas-verse from Codex Comics, and the book is leaning hard into the difference between being famous and actually being heroic.
The series introduces Kayla Rae, a massively popular influencer who is also becoming a superhero. She has fame, power, a giant audience and the kind of online reach most brands would sell a kidney for, but the story is not interested in treating that status like a free pass. Once a tragic mistake forces Kayla to confront the consequences of her choices, the carefully controlled image she has built starts coming apart in public.
That setup gives Charisma a modern angle that fits the superhero genre better than it might sound at first. Superheroes have always dealt with public identity and reputation, but social media changes the scale and speed of the problem. A mistake becomes a clip, a victory becomes content, a personality becomes a brand, and millions of strangers can decide who you are before you have figured it out yourself.
Codex is using that tension to dig into fame, responsibility, accountability and redemption. Kayla has to learn that being admired is not the same thing as being heroic, and that is a much more interesting problem than simply asking whether she can beat the next villain in a fight. If the book commits to that idea, it has room to say something about clout, image and the weird pressure to perform your identity for an audience.
The interiors are illustrated by Hakan Ayden, with colors by Chuck M. Obach, bringing Kayla’s superhero world and social-media-fueled life together visually. Collectors are also getting multiple variant options from Adriano Oliveria, Bear Witch, Taurus Art, Courtney Rose and Bruna Sales, giving the launch several different looks instead of treating the main cover as the only entry point. fileciteturn26file0L61-L69
Charisma #1 also expands an existing universe rather than launching in a vacuum. Codex Comics is continuing to build out the Glas-verse with previous releases including The Glas Prequel: The Tragic Legacy of Glas, Glas #1, Glas #2 and Pyro Vixen #1, connecting Kayla to a broader lineup of heroes, villains and supernatural threats. fileciteturn26file0L71-L76
For readers who want to sample more of the publisher’s catalog, Codex also offers mystery boxes pulling from across its library. That may be a side note compared with the new book, but it gives curious readers a simple way to see how much of the Glas-verse and broader Codex line is already out there before deciding how deep they want to go.
The Charisma #1: #LuckyCharms campaign is live on Kickstarter and open for pre-orders through October 9. The campaign page is available here: Charisma #1 on Kickstarter.
This is the kind of indie superhero setup Comic Crusaders likes seeing because it is not just “new hero punches bad guy.” Codex is using superhero language to talk about clout, mistakes, public image and what happens when the persona everyone follows becomes bigger than the person underneath it. That is where this book can get messy, and messy is usually where the interesting stuff starts.
