CREATURE CORPS #1 BRINGS ’90s MONSTER-BATTLING MAYHEM TO IMAGE COMICS THIS DECEMBER

Okay, this is the kind of comic pitch that hits me right in the Saturday-morning-cartoon part of the brain. Image Comics is unleashing Creature Corps #1 this December, and writer Curt Pires and artist JOK are coming in swinging with monsters, military hardware, supernatural chaos, and the kind of unapologetic ’90s energy that makes you want to crank the volume and tear open a comic.

The setup drops us into a world where giant creatures are not campfire stories anymore. They are a global problem. Humanity’s answer is the Creature Corps, a specialized military force built to take the fight directly to these beasts. That immediately gives the book a fun playground because we are not waiting around for somebody to believe monsters exist. Everybody knows. The question is how the hell you survive them.

Pires has never been shy about swinging for big concepts, and this one sounds designed to move. The appeal is right there in the DNA: kaiju-scale threats, soldiers thrown into impossible situations, secret-history vibes, and enough genre fuel to bounce between action, horror, science fiction, and straight-up monster madness without asking permission.

JOK’s artwork is a huge part of why the concept works. A book called Creature Corps needs creatures that actually feel dangerous and action that looks like it hurts. The early material leans into that larger-than-life scale while still keeping the human characters readable inside all the destruction. You want to feel the size difference when people are standing next to something that could turn a city block into gravel.

There is also something refreshing about a comic willing to wear its influences proudly. If you grew up on monster toys, creature features, military sci-fi, arcade games, and comics where every issue felt like somebody was trying to out-crazy the previous one, this is speaking your language. The trick will be giving all that spectacle characters worth caring about, but the playground is absolutely there.

Image Comics has become one of the best homes for creators who want to mash genres together and see what explodes, and Creature Corps looks ready to test the blast radius. This could be ridiculous in exactly the right way.
