COMIC CRUSADERS HOT LIST: THE 10 HOTTEST COMICS FOR AUGUST 25th & 26th, 2026
·Al Mega

WEPAAAA, Crusaders! New Comic Book Day is rolling up with occult spies, prehistoric Gotham greenery, mutant nightmares, supernatural fists, vampiric crossovers, killer black cats and enough variant covers to make your wallet request witness protection. August 25th and 26th are not playing nice, mi gente.
This week brings approximately 95 single-issue releases, led by Image Comics, DC and Marvel, with serious contenders from BOOM! Studios, Mad Cave, Top Cow, Skybound and DC Vertigo. The Comic Crusaders HOT List ain’t here to dump an entire release spreadsheet in your lap and disappear like somebody’s cousin after the dinner bill arrives. We studied the #1 launches, creator teams, franchise momentum, reader chatter, nostalgia power, cover programs, potential keys and the books people are already circling on their pull lists.
The release-date audit has also been completed. Every comic ranked below is confirmed for Wednesday, August 26, 2026 through publisher announcements, distributor records and multiple retailer shipping lists. Tuesday, August 25 delivers the bookstore and graphic-novel side of the weekly schedule, but none carried enough collector heat to knock these ten floppy releases out of the ring. No recycled listings. No delayed books pretending they still belong here. No embarrassment at the comic shop. Receipts are waiting beneath the countdown.
Remember the golden rule: speculation is speculation. A shiny 1:100 cover does not arrive with a retirement account stapled inside. Collect what you love, chase intelligently and never let Wednesday morning FOMO body-slam your grocery money.
#10: WHAT IF…? X-MEN #1
HOT METER: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Cover Pick: Jim Rugg Homage Variant
Marvel Comics | Ashley Allen, Sumit Kumar & Lucas Werneck | On Sale August 26, 2026
Cassandra Nova kills Charles Xavier before he is even born. Jean Grey and Emma Frost become hunted fugitives. Telepaths are captured, experimented on and transformed into something considerably uglier than another Xavier School group project gone sideways. Yeah, Marvel woke up and selected psychic violence.
Ashley Allen and Sumit Kumar take one of mutant history’s most disturbing villains and hand her an entire alternate timeline to ruin. The concept earns immediate attention because it does more than switch costumes or ask whether Wolverine ordered pancakes instead of waffles. Removing Xavier rewires the foundation of the X-Men mythology and places Jean and Emma, two characters with wildly different philosophies and enough personal baggage to jam every overhead bin at JFK, at the center of the resistance.
Collector interest comes from its position as part of Marvel’s 50th-anniversary celebration of What If…?, its standalone accessibility and the unusually dark Cassandra Nova premise. The variant program is controlled compared with several books higher on the list, which keeps the chase from becoming a full-time accounting job.
#9: DENVER #1
HOT METER: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Cover Pick: Cover A by Amanda Conner
Mad Cave Studios | Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray, Pier Brito & Bill Tortolini | On Sale August 26, 2026
The oceans have swallowed most of civilization, Denver has become a massive vertical city surrounded by water, and humanity is doing what humanity always does when resources get tight: lying, scheming and making everything approximately nine hundred times worse.
Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray reunite for a three-issue dystopian crime thriller featuring art and colors by Pier Brito, letters by Bill Tortolini and a cover lineup including Amanda Conner, Pier Brito, Uko Smith and Dave Johnson. Mad Cave is pitching this toward readers who enjoy Escape From New York, East of West and Children of Men, which is a hell of a neighborhood to move into.
The heat comes from the combination of proven creators, a short three-issue commitment, an easy elevator pitch and Amanda Conner handling the main cover. Creator-owned science fiction remains one of the smartest corners of the market to watch because a strong visual concept can travel far beyond the Wednesday rack. Nobody should start pricing the movie rights from the parking lot, but atmospheric crime, political paranoia and a flooded future make this a legitimate sleeper candidate. Mad Cave confirms the August 26 release and an August 3 final-order cutoff.
#8: STUFF OF NIGHTMARES: THE CAT IN THE COFFIN #1
HOT METER: 🔥🔥🔥🔥½
Cover Pick: Junji Ito 1:20 Incentive Variant

BOOM! Studios | R.L. Stine, Matthew Dunn, Pippa Bowland & Simon Bowland | On Sale August 26, 2026
R.L. Stine plus cursed-cat horror already sounds like somebody engineered a comic specifically to trigger childhood trauma and collector behavior at the same time.
Harvey Goodwin is broke, unemployed and convinced the antique stuffed cat being buried with his mother could solve his financial problems. He steals it from the coffin, abandons the three living cats he promised to care for and quickly discovers the universe has a nasty little return policy. The haunting escalates through bleeding ears, phantom cries and reality itself getting swapped around him.
This one-shot comes packed with recognizable horror branding, a self-contained story and a cover program built for collectors. Francesco Francavilla and DANI contribute glow-in-the-dark editions, while the incentive ladder includes a 1:10 Miguel Mercado/Vilchez piece and a 1:20 cover from manga-horror icon Junji Ito. The Ito is the collector magnet, but the Francavilla glow cover might be the visually smarter grab if you can find it near retail.
#7: ABSOLUTE CATWOMAN #3
HOT METER: 🔥🔥🔥🔥½
Cover Pick: Kaare Andrews Variant
DC Comics | Scott Snyder, Che Grayson, Bengal & Giovanna Niro | On Sale August 26, 2026
The Absolute Universe remains one of DC’s loudest collector engines, and Selina Kyle is already showing that this version of Catwoman did not come here to quietly borrow jewelry and leave through the window.
Scott Snyder, Che Grayson and Bengal continue rebuilding Catwoman from the claws up, turning familiar Gotham mythology into something sharper, bloodier and much less interested in asking permission. Issue #3 arrives while the six-issue opening series is still young enough for curious readers to catch up without needing a corkboard, red string and a six-hour YouTube explanation.
Key Collector tracks fifteen cover entries around the issue, with Bengal handling Cover A and variants from artists including Kaare Andrews, Mahmud Asrar, Frank Martin, Kyuyong Eom and Mike Mayhew. Fifteen covers also means buyers need to breathe into a paper bag before trying to collect the entire litter. The Absolute line carries heat, but high cover volume can spread demand thinner than gas-station coffee. Pick the artwork that smacks you in the face and keep it moving.
#6: TOMB OF APOCALYPSE #1
HOT METER: 🔥🔥🔥🔥½
Cover Pick: Pablo Villalobos 1:100 Virgin Variant

Marvel Comics | Ashley Allen, Domenico Carbone & Rod Reis | On Sale August 26, 2026
Apocalypse is stranded in exile, but En Sabah Nur has never needed to be physically present to make everybody else’s week completely miserable.
When a mysterious device crashes near Haven House, Jubilee sees an opportunity to prove she belongs on dangerous missions instead of babysitting the Outliers. Her reward is getting recruited alongside Wolverine to recover a Celestial artifact connected to Apocalypse. Congratulations on the promotion, Jubilation. Human Resources forgot to mention the possible planetary extinction.
Ashley Allen and Domenico Carbone launch a new four-issue mutant quest carrying legitimate fan appeal through Apocalypse, Wolverine and Jubilee. Rod Reis provides the main cover, while the chase program includes Ivan Shavrin, Fabrizio De Tommaso, Nogi San and Pablo Villalobos. The Villalobos virgin edition carries a 1:100 ratio, making it the obvious high-end target, although scarcity alone does not automatically crown it king of the long boxes.
The real attraction is character positioning. Jubilee stepping into a more consequential X-Men role gives the issue narrative upside, while the Celestial mystery offers room for revelations that could matter beyond the miniseries.
#5: BATMAN: BAD SEEDS, SUNSET #1
HOT METER: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Cover Pick: Dan Mora Variant
DC Comics | Matt Fraction, G. Willow Wilson, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Cliff Rathburn & Tomeu Morey | On Sale August 26, 2026
Gotham is losing power, Vandal Savage is militarizing the police and Mayor Pamela Isley is preparing one final move that could transform the city into prehistoric salad. Batman has survived Joker toxins, earthquakes, gang wars and multiple Robins with emotional boundaries, but carnivorous plant life swallowing entire neighborhoods is still one filthy Wednesday.
Sunset officially launches the ten-week Batman: Bad Seeds event, a Gotham-wide crossover steered by Matt Fraction and G. Willow Wilson. Giuseppe Camuncoli, Cliff Rathburn and Tomeu Morey handle the main visual assault, while the storyline spreads through Batman, Poison Ivy, Detective Comics, Batgirl, Batwoman, Catwoman, Nightwing and Harley Quinn.
Event launches attract collectors because they are clean historical markers even when no first appearance is hiding behind the final page. DC also brought variant firepower from Dan Mora, Marcio Takara, Jorge Jiménez and Jeff Spokes, whose edition receives a glow-in-the-dark treatment. The danger comes from crossover fatigue. Ten weeks and multiple titles can turn a casual pull into a utility bill, but Sunset #1 remains the centerpiece collectors will recognize as the official starting gun.
#4: WITCHBLADE/VAMPIRELLA #1
HOT METER: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Cover Pick: Cover B by Joseph Michael Linsner
Top Cow / Image Comics / Dynamite Entertainment | Marguerite Bennett, Laura Braga & Arif Prianto | On Sale August 26, 2026
Witchblade and Vampirella are sharing a comic again after more than twenty years, and somewhere a ’90s collector just sat straight up like the Bat-Signal hit the ceiling.
Detective Sara Pezzini encounters a mutated vampire tearing through the city and gets bitten during the fight. Vampirella arrives to help, but Sara is infected, the clock is running and “stake first, ask questions later” is starting to look like a reasonable medical plan. Marguerite Bennett and Laura Braga understand exactly what readers want from this pairing: horror, attitude, monstrous action and two iconic characters who refuse to let the other dominate the room.
The crossover structure gives collectors another angle. Image and Top Cow publish this first one-shot, while Dynamite follows with Vampirella/Witchblade #1 in September from Erica Schultz and Valentina Pinti. That creates a natural two-book set, and collectors love sets almost as much as they love pretending the ninth variant was absolutely necessary.
Key Collector tracks a massive 23 cover entries around this release. Laura Braga handles the main edition, while Joseph Michael Linsner and Sveta Shubina provide the standard alternates. Twenty-three is a buffet, not scarcity, so hunt the cover art and ratios with real demand instead of buying anything that sparkles under fluorescent lighting. The long-awaited reunion, two-publisher format and established fan bases still make this one of the loudest books of the week.
#3: M.A.S.K. ORIGINS #1
HOT METER: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Cover Pick: Cover A by Pye Parr
Skybound / Image Comics / Hasbro | Robert Kirkman, Joshua Williamson, Dan Mora, Andrea Milana, Pye Parr & Team | On Sale August 26, 2026
M.A.S.K. is coming, V.E.N.O.M. is coming, and every ’80s kid who remembers transforming vehicles is suddenly examining the monthly budget with suspicious creativity.
Here is the important distinction: M.A.S.K. Origins #1 is a double-sized collection gathering the first appearances of M.A.S.K., V.E.N.O.M. and other Energon Universe moments that paved the road toward the new series. It is not the first publication of those appearances. Nobody gets to sell you a “brand-new first appearance” twice just because the staples moved.
What it does provide is an accessible, purpose-built entry point ahead of the full M.A.S.K. launch, complete with a $4.99 price, 48 pages and covers from Pye Parr, Jason Howard, Ethan Young, Danilo Beyruth, Neeraj Menon and Ben Oliver. The release was originally connected to Skybound’s blind-bag program before being opened for standard ordering, which adds another layer to its unusual collector history.
The Energon Universe has turned legacy Hasbro properties into genuine modern comic-book heat, and M.A.S.K. is one of the largest unused nostalgia missiles in the hangar. Readers who missed the scattered introductions can catch up in one issue, while collectors gain a clean “origins” package tied directly to the franchise launch. August 26 is confirmed by both industry coverage and weekly store lists.
#2: HAMMERFIST #1
HOT METER: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Cover Pick: Cover B by Jerome Opeña
Giant Generator / Image Comics | Rick Remender, Steve Epting, Matt Hollingsworth & Rus Wooton | On Sale August 26, 2026
Rick Remender and Steve Epting just pulled up with a supernatural crime comic described as Reservoir Dogs colliding with Evil Dead. Fam, you cannot whisper a pitch like that. You kick the door open and let the blood hit the walls.
Mike Denton is a hitman, addict, absentee father and professional disaster who has spent his entire life choosing the easiest and usually worst option available. When an ancient darkness called Black Noon threatens to erase all light, Mike discovers a supernatural weapon powered by love. Unfortunately, love is the one fuel this human tow-truck fire has never learned how to use.
Remender supplies the creator-owned pedigree, while Epting and Matt Hollingsworth bring the kind of visual muscle capable of moving from grounded crime into full splatter-horror without throwing the transmission through the hood. The debut runs 48 pages and carries a deep cover bench featuring Epting, Jerome Opeña, Nic Klein, Dan Panosian, Andrew Robinson and incentives from Daniel Acuña and Robinson. The 1:100 foil is the expensive trophy, but Opeña’s open-order Cover B may become the reader-friendly favorite.
Fresh Image #1, elite creative team, killer high-concept hook and legitimate reader curiosity place Hammerfist one clean punch away from the crown. Image confirms its August 26 arrival directly. Peep our review.
#1: BLACK TOWER: THE RAVEN CONSPIRACY #1
HOT METER: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Cover Pick: Cover A by Mike Perkins
DC Vertigo | Ram V, Mike Perkins, Mike Spicer & AndWorld Design | On Sale August 26, 2026
Occult warfare. British intelligence. Ancient wards. Wizard spies. Silencers sitting beside spell books. Ram V and Mike Perkins reuniting under the DC Vertigo banner. Yeah, Crusaders, this bad boy walked into the building already holding the championship belt.
Twenty-three-year-old American intelligence rookie Darren Burroughs is sent to train with Division Nine, a forgotten British unit specializing in paranormal incidents. Hidden behind modern cyber warfare and drone strikes, another global conflict is raging over magical power. Someone intends to steal the head of a giant king and destroy a centuries-old ward protecting Britain, which is a sentence MI6 definitely leaves out of the recruitment brochure.
Ram V and Mike Perkins previously delivered a strong creative partnership on The Swamp Thing, and Black Tower lets them work in territory tailor-made for their strengths: conspiracies, horror, mythology, political tension and characters standing one bad decision away from supernatural catastrophe. Mike Spicer provides colors and AndWorld Design handles lettering, while Evan Cagle, Mark Buckingham and ACO join the cover program.
The collector package is strong without becoming ridiculous. It is a mature-readers DC Vertigo #1, a new creator-driven property, a 40-page debut priced at $3.99 and the beginning of a six-issue recurring series rather than another endless event with seventeen tie-ins and a decoder ring. Reader chatter is already leaning positive, particularly around Ram V’s involvement and the return of Vertigo-style occult espionage.
Black Tower: The Raven Conspiracy #1 owns the best overall mixture of reader appeal, creator credibility, first-issue collectibility, reasonable cover count and genuine curiosity this week. No manufactured cameo rumor required. No mystery silhouette pretending to be the next Punchline. Just a nasty original concept built by creators who know exactly how to make magic feel dangerous.
So yeah, mi gente, Black Tower: The Raven Conspiracy #1 is your Comic Crusaders HOT List champion for August 25th and 26th, 2026. Somebody alert His Majesty. The wizards got the belt.
New Comic Book Day is stacked with different flavors of heat this week. Black Tower could become the creator-driven Vertigo book readers keep recommending after the launch smoke clears. Hammerfist comes armed with a major creative team and a concept built to leave blood on the bumper. M.A.S.K. is preparing another Energon Universe nostalgia takeover, while Witchblade and Vampirella are reuniting after more than two decades.
Batman’s next Gotham disaster officially begins, Apocalypse drags Jubilee and Wolverine into a Celestial mess, Absolute Catwoman keeps the variant crowd fed, R.L. Stine unleashes feline karma, Denver brings indie science-fiction muscle and Cassandra Nova builds an X-Men timeline from hell.
Buy what you love. Hunt smart. Do not confuse a ratio number with guaranteed value, and never let somebody wearing flip-flops at 7:00 a.m. convince you his thirty-copy preorder automatically means “inside information.”
Hit your LCS, support the shops keeping this beautiful madness alive, tell us what made YOUR pull list and remember…
THE CRUSADE NEVER ENDS!
