IMAGE COMICS’ FIRST OFFICIAL WHATNOT DROP BRINGS A TODD McFARLANE SPAWN ’77 #1 EXCLUSIVE

Image Comics is taking its first official swing at Whatnot, and they are not walking into the room quietly. They are bringing Spawn with them, because apparently subtlety was never invited to this party.

Image Comics will host its first official Whatnot drop on Wednesday, September 9 at 6 p.m. Eastern, with the spotlight landing on a highly collectible exclusive Spawn ’77 #1 variant cover. The exclusive is priced at $40 and features artwork by Spawn creator Todd McFarlane paying homage to his iconic Amazing Spider-Man #300 cover. Yeah, fam, they knew exactly which nostalgia button they were smashing.

The timing fits the history behind Spawn ’77. McFarlane first began developing ideas for the character that would become Spawn back in 1977. Nearly five decades later, Spawn has grown from those early ideas into a global franchise spanning comics, animation, film, toys and games. Now McFarlane and acclaimed artist Mark Spears are reaching back toward that original vision and bringing it into the modern Spawn Universe.

For collectors, though, the hook here is obvious. This is Image Comics’ first official Whatnot drop, it is built around an exclusive Spawn cover, and McFarlane is visually calling back to one of the most recognizable Spider-Man covers of his career. That combination is basically collector catnip.

Whatnot is a live-shopping platform where fans can buy, sell and connect in real time. Image entering the space officially could also make this September 9 event more than a one-and-done experiment. The publisher is already encouraging fans to follow its account for future surprise Whatnot happenings, so this may be the beginning of another direct lane between Image, collectors and comic fans.
