Jorge Fornés Brings Retro Superhero Heat to Steve Skroce’s Tales of Wonder

Skybound and Image Comics unveil a three-cover America’s Freedom Force series ahead of the reality-bending comic’s September debut

Comic collectors, get those pull lists ready because Jorge Fornés is bringing some serious old-school superhero flavor to Tales of Wonder, the wild new limited series from Skybound and Image Comics.

Skybound revealed a striking collection of variant covers from the acclaimed Wonder Woman artist, spotlighting America’s Freedom Force across the first three issues of the upcoming series. The covers carry that classic comic-book energy Fornés does so well, while teasing a story where costumed heroes are no longer trapped inside the funny pages. Created, written, and illustrated by superstar storyteller Steve Skroce, with colors by Ian Herring and lettering by Pat Brosseau, Tales of Wonder #1 arrives at comic shops on September 2, 2026.

“Biting satire and wickedly gorgeous action. A new Steve Skroce comic is always cause for celebration,” said Jason Aaron, writer of Bug Wars and Absolute Superman.

Ludo Lullabi, artist of Ghost Pepper and Battle Chasers, added, “After reading Tales of Wonder, I want to meet my own characters and go on an adventure with them, too.”

That sounds fun until the monsters show up and start wrecking the neighborhood. Then everybody suddenly remembers they left the stove on. The story follows Stu and Jake, two longtime friends whose bond was forged during World War II before being shattered by the comic-book business. Together, they created the characters of Wonder Comics, watching their four-color heroes grow from popular creations into a worldwide entertainment empire. Success, however, came with decades of resentment, stolen credit, and enough emotional baggage to fill every booth at San Diego Comic-Con.

Years later, the legendary creators reunite to launch an ambitious America’s Freedom Force cinematic universe. There is only one tiny problem. Their fictional superheroes, villains, creatures, and monsters have somehow become real. Now Stu and Jake must figure out how to survive their own imaginations while confronting the personal history that tore them apart. Saving the world may require more than capes and cosmic punches. It may force two bitter creators to finally settle the score over who built the universe, who received the glory, and who got left behind.

Skroce’s concept mixes superhero spectacle, creator-industry drama, sharp satire, and some wonderfully unhinged action. Fans of Ghost Pepper and The Ultimates should find plenty to dig into, especially with Skroce’s detailed visual storytelling powering the madness.

The first issue will feature a main cover by Steve Skroce and Ian Herring, alongside a stacked variant program. Readers can choose from an open-to-order cover by Yasmine Putri, the first America’s Freedom Force cover by Jorge Fornés, a 1:25 incentive variant by Peter Carroll, a 1:50 incentive variant by Caspar Wijngaard, and a 1:100 foil incentive variant by Miki Montlló.

The lineup also includes a blank sketch cover and a special Witchblade team-up variant from Steve Skroce and colorist Neeraj Menon. With Fornés delivering three connected thematic covers and Skroce unleashing a world where comic-book mythology crashes directly into reality, Tales of Wonder is shaping up to be one of September’s most intriguing new releases. The heroes are real. The monsters are real. The grudges between their creators might be the most dangerous thing of all.
