Originally conceived by Shi creator Billy Tucci and Gary Cohn, with Cohn handling the writing, Senryaku: The Thirty-Six Stratagems of the Art of War assembled a creative lineup that still looks ridiculous three decades later.
We’re talking Jim Lee, Amanda Conner, Frank Frazetta, Adam Hughes, George Pérez, Jae Lee, Marc Silvestri, Humberto Ramos, Jimmy Palmiotti, Stan Sakai, Joe Quesada, Jeff Smith, Terry Moore, Geof Darrow, Billy Tucci, Dan Jurgens, Joe Jusko, David Mack, Mark Texeira, Julie Bell, Jim Balent and more. Yeah. Read that list again. That’s not hype. That’s the roster.

Thirty years ago, some of the greatest independent and mainstream artists in comics came together to create something wildly ambitious. Rather than having one artist interpret the entire story, Senryaku presented 36 individual stories, each visually interpreted by a different celebrated creator.
At the center of those stories is a young Ana Ishikawa, better known to fans as Shi, learning lessons from her grandfather inspired by the ancient strategies contained within The Thirty-Six Stratagems. That structure gave every artist room to bring a completely different visual language to Ana’s journey while still contributing to one larger narrative.
Now Crusade Comics is going back to the source material and giving that artwork the presentation it deserves.
The newly remastered 240-page oversized hardcover Shi: Senryaku Omnibus has been meticulously rescanned, with more than half of the artwork being published in this form for the first time. The goal is simple: reproduce these pieces as closely as possible to the way their creators originally intended them to be seen. And then there’s the cover.
The omnibus features a special dust jacket showcasing artwork by the legendary Frank Frazetta, immediately putting this thing into serious display-piece territory. The hardcover will also include a sewn-in satin ribbon bookmark and an “Oops” signed-page insert from Billy Tucci, giving longtime Shi fans another little piece of Crusade history tucked inside. But Crusade isn’t stopping with the hardcover.
Zoop backers will have access to additional campaign-exclusive rewards including prints, original artwork and a special 96-page Shi: Senryaku Collector’s Edition featuring an actual metal lenticular cover. Yes, metal. Lenticular. Cover. Collectors just sat up in their chairs. 😂

The anniversary campaign will also offer a very limited 96-page Shi: Senryaku facsimile trade paperback graphic novel, complete with an all-new homage cover by Billy Tucci and another exclusive lenticular metal cover created specifically for the 30th anniversary celebration.
Among the treasures revisited throughout the project are pieces from creators such as Will Eisner Hall of Fame inductee Jeff Smith, whose original Senryaku artwork brought an emotional, soulful interpretation to Shi’s world, alongside unforgettable contributions from superstar creators including Jim Lee and many others.
For longtime Shi readers, this is a chance to revisit one of Crusade Comics’ most ambitious projects in a format built to celebrate the art itself. For newer fans who missed the original release, it’s an opportunity to see what happens when an absolutely stacked generation of comic-book creators gets turned loose on one character, one concept and 36 very different artistic interpretations. And because the book is already printed and ready for fulfillment, Crusade Comics isn’t just pitching a future possibility. The anniversary edition is ready to roll.
The Shi: Senryaku 30th Anniversary campaign launches Tuesday, August 11 on Zoop.
If legendary comic art, oversized hardcovers, Frank Frazetta, Jim Lee, Adam Hughes, Marc Silvestri, George Pérez, Jeff Smith and rare Shi material sound like your particular brand of trouble, you already know what to do.
