Steve Niles Turns Jupiter’s Moon Into a Cosmic Crime Scene in CALLISTO

·Al Mega

The creator of 30 Days of Night joins Andrea Mutti, Lee Loughridge, and The Lab Press for a 180-page sci-fi noir nightmare exploring colonization, religion, power, and the darkness humanity carries into space.

Humanity may eventually escape Earth, but apparently, we are packing all our problems for the trip.

The Lab Press is heading deep into the darkness with CALLISTO, a new original graphic novel from legendary horror writer Steve Niles, the twisted mind behind 30 Days of Night, The October Faction, and Frankenstein Alive, Alive!

This time, Niles is trading frozen Alaskan nightmares for the second-largest moon of Jupiter, blending science fiction, detective noir, religious conspiracy, and full-blown cosmic horror into one chilling 180-page mystery. Because space was not terrifying enough already.

Niles is joined by fan-favorite artist Andrea Mutti (Creatures & Corridors, George Romero’s Empire of the Dead), award-winning colorist Lee Loughridge (G.I. Joe, Standstill), and letterer Marshall Dillon. Designers Emma Price and John J. Hill round out the creative crew, bringing The Lab Press’ distinctive visual identity to this ambitious new world.

At the center of the story is Detective Becca Ramos, whose investigation into a series of unexplained disappearances pulls her into something far more dangerous than a routine missing-person case. Callisto has grown into one of humanity’s most important industrial and mining settlements. It is a thriving hub of commerce, culture, religion, and opportunity. Sounds wonderful, right? Yeah, not so fast, fam.

Where there is money, there is blood. Where there is influence, there is control. And beneath Callisto’s polished surface, something ancient, unnatural, and hungry appears to be waiting. Ramos soon uncovers evidence of a hidden religious cult, a steadily increasing body count, and a dark otherworldly force lurking beneath the colony. What begins as an investigation quickly becomes a fight for survival, with the safety of the entire settlement hanging in the balance.

This is not merely a story about monsters in space. CALLISTO asks whether humanity can truly build a new civilization or whether we are destined to recreate the same systems, fears, divisions, and power struggles wherever we plant a flag.

“I love the idea of taking a different setting and using it to say something about the world we live in today,” said Niles. “While 30 Days of Night might have seemed like an ‘alien’ landscape to some, Callisto ratchets the suspense and horror up to another level with its truly alien setting and surroundings.”

Niles added, “How would the darkness of humanity evolve when it encounters the darkness of something else entirely? Does escaping the Earth’s orbit allow us to escape our own demons, or do we simply take them with us?”

Let us keep it real. Humanity could travel millions of miles into space, build cities on alien moons, unlock futuristic technology, and somehow still bring greed, control, corruption, and religious extremism along as carry-on luggage. That is the uncomfortable nerve CALLISTO appears ready to hit.

“At The Lab, we’re always looking for stories that couldn’t exist anywhere else,” said Dagen Walker, editor-in-chief of The Lab Press. “Callisto feels like one of those books. Steve takes the familiar language of science fiction and noir and transforms it into something deeply personal and unexpectedly haunting.”

Walker described the graphic novel as “ambitious, uncompromising, and exactly the kind of original storytelling we believe deserves a place on the shelf.”

The book’s main cover comes from acclaimed painter Scott Hampton, whose artwork gives CALLISTO a sweeping, cinematic presence. A special Limited Edition cover by Chris Shehan will also be available, with only 200 copies being produced. The best part for collectors is that the limited “Day One” edition will launch alongside the standard release at the same price. No inflated premium. No wallet getting body-slammed from orbit. Just a genuinely rare edition for readers lucky enough to grab one.

“Limited Edition versions of The Lab Press books have been part of our DNA since day one,” said Diane Richey, president of The Lab Press. “These ‘Day One’ editions launch right alongside the main release, giving readers a shot at something rarer without paying a premium for it.”

Blending the futuristic noir atmosphere of Blade Runner, the deep-space terror of Event Horizon, the investigative dread of True Detective, and a touch of the relentless horror that made 30 Days of Night a modern classic, CALLISTO is shaping up to be one serious addition to this year’s Halloween reading list.
