The X Art Show Brings 60 Years of Mutant History, X-Men Creators and Live Fan Events to Los Angeles

The immersive North Hollywood exhibition features talent from X-Men ’97, Marvel Comics and classic X-Men animation, plus original artwork, creator panels, live podcasts, cosplay, comedy, burlesque and a life-sized Krakoan Gate.

Mutantkind is officially setting up shop in Los Angeles, and this is not some quiet little gallery where everybody whispers and pretends they understand abstract art. The X Art Show: A Marvelous Mutant Tribute is taking over Moby’s Coffee & Tea Co. in North Hollywood for two weeks of original artwork, live entertainment, creator appearances and full-powered X-Men fandom.

Presented by Giant-Size Productions and Moby’s Coffee & Tea Co., the immersive pop-up exhibition will run from August 2 through August 15, 2026, following an exclusive Preview Night Party on August 1. The organizers describe the event as part gallery exhibition, part live performance series and part fan festival, all built to celebrate more than six decades of Marvel’s legendary mutant franchise.

Co-curated by Giant-Size Productions co-founder Chris Riley and lead artist Adrienne Jimenez, the show will transform the neighborhood coffee shop into a mutant-inspired gathering place filled with fine art, sculptures, themed beverages, creator programming and interactive installations. More than 40 artists from the worlds of comic books, animation, gaming, film and television are scheduled to participate.

The featured roster includes X-Men ’97 supervising producer and director Jake Castorena, longtime Marvel and DC Comics artist Scott Koblish, X-Men: Evolution lead character designer and director Steven E. Gordon, Emmy Award-winning character designer Maximus Julius Pauson and Emmy-winning animator Ryan Quincy.

Also participating are X-Men ’97 story artist Jerry Gaylord, DreamWorks Animation veteran Paul Schoeni, official Marvel illustrator Marcio Fiorito and comic book and children’s publishing artist Penelope R. Gaylord. Their work will appear alongside original paintings, digital illustrations, handcrafted three-dimensional sculptures and other mutant-inspired pieces created specifically for the exhibition.

At the center of the experience will be a handcrafted, life-sized Krakoan Gate created by Secret Forest LA. The installation is designed to serve as both the exhibition’s centerpiece and a major photo opportunity for cosplayers and fans looking to step through their own gateway into the mutant world.

Let’s be real, if you build a full Krakoan Gate and expect X-Men fans not to show up dressed like Storm, Wolverine, Rogue, Gambit or somebody’s extremely obscure favorite Morlock, you have clearly never met comic book people. We do not play when the cosplay opportunity presents itself.

Moby’s Coffee & Tea Co. will also introduce a specialty menu of X-Men-inspired coffee, tea and mocktails throughout the exhibition. Participating artists have created original pieces combining mutant mythology with café culture, including Elijah Henry’s “Coffee Break, Bub,” Kaveh Taherian’s “Beverage Beast,” Blanca Maldonado’s “Ororo’s Blend” and Darryl Murphy’s “X-Press-O.”

The event will place a special emphasis on highlighting local artists, creators of color and members of the LGBTQIA+ creative community. That focus extends beyond the artwork through a partnership with Nerds Vote, a non-partisan nonprofit organization encouraging comic book fans, gamers, cosplayers and convention attendees to register and participate in the democratic process.

Ten percent of all gallery art sales will benefit Nerds Vote. The organization is co-led by voice actors JP Karliak, who portrays Morph in X-Men ’97, and Courtenay Taylor, the voice of Callisto and Magik in the animated series.

“With the massive global acclaim of X-Men ’97, mutant fandom across generations is more connected than ever,” Riley said. “The X Art Show was conceived as a physical home for that passion, a space where you can appreciate fine art from visionary creators like Jake Castorena, Scott Koblish, Maximus Pauson and Steven E. Gordon, take a photo in front of a Krakoan Gate, grab a specialty drink and celebrate together.”

Moby’s Coffee & Tea Co. owners Ben Bromfield and Libby Ward said the exhibition fits naturally with the venue’s mission of supporting community, creativity and shared cultural experiences.

“Moby’s has always been about fostering community, art and great coffee in North Hollywood,” Bromfield and Ward said. “Partnering with Giant-Size Productions to transform our space into an immersive tribute allows us to welcome neighbors, comic readers and international creators under one roof.”

The official opening-day programming begins Sunday, August 2, with a curator walkthrough hosted by Riley and Jimenez at noon. That will be followed at 1 p.m. by an intimate panel and signing featuring Eric Lewald and Julia Lewald, the showrunners behind the original 1992 X-Men: The Animated Series.

The Lewalds will discuss the creative history of the beloved Saturday morning series and its lasting connection to Marvel Studios’ X-Men ’97. Following the panel, they will sign copies of their books Previously on X-Men and X-Men: The Art and Making of The Animated Series.

At 2 p.m., comic book historian and Upper Deck Talent Relations Coordinator Matt Dunford will host “X-Men History Hour,” an accessible deep dive into the franchise’s evolution from its 1963 comic book debut to its current position as one of the most recognizable properties in global pop culture.

Opening-day events will continue at 3 p.m. with a live recording of Solving for X-Men, an audience-participatory podcast examining the visual and cultural representation of mutantkind across comics, animation, film and other media.

The programming keeps rolling on Monday, August 3, with T.G.I.M., also known as “Thank Geeky It’s Monday,” a live stand-up comedy event hosted by Reuben Bresler and produced by Jackie Kashian and Jenni Powell. The gallery will remain free to explore, while the evening comedy performance will require a ticket.

On Tuesday, August 4, comedian Matt Raub and producer Nikole Zivalic will host a live recording of Cyclops Is Waiting for Me. The show will feature an X-Men fantasy draft, character debates and the kind of mutant power arguments that can turn lifelong friends into enemies faster than somebody asking whether Cyclops could beat Wolverine in a fair fight.

Friday, August 7, brings Haus of Cosplay: X-Men Edition, a high-energy night of drag, burlesque and boylesque inspired by Marvel’s mutant universe. Hosted by Jimmy Sherfy, the ticketed event will also benefit Nerds Vote.

The celebration expands internationally on Saturday, August 8, with a live bilingual recording of Sala Llena. Hosted by Jorge Coll and David Alejandro, the CDMX-to-Los Angeles pop-culture program will explore the X-Men’s history, popularity and cultural impact throughout Latin America.

On Sunday, August 9, Steven E. Gordon will take center stage for an all-day showcase. Gordon, whose career includes X-Men: Evolution, Wolverine and the X-Men, The Lord of the Rings and Shrek 2, will appear for a signing from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. and participate in a live career retrospective panel at 1 p.m.

The event will also host RomyCon: Gambit & Rogue Night on Thursday, August 13. The free fan gathering will celebrate one of the X-Men’s most popular couples with trivia, card games, themed drinks, cosplay prizes and a whole lot of Southern-fried romantic chaos.

Look, Rogue and Gambit fans have been waiting through breakups, betrayals, alternate timelines, emotional baggage and decades of Marvel drama. They earned a party. Let them cook.

The Cosmoe Show will host a live networking taping on August 14, leading into the official Closing Night Party on Saturday, August 15. The ticketed finale will feature live music by The All-Nighters, a mutant-themed burlesque showcase and a cosplay contest.

Scheduled performers for the closing celebration include Candace Cane, Miss Spent Youth, Dare Taylor and Blanche Bourgeois. It is basically the kind of wild mutant sendoff that Professor Xavier probably would not approve of, which means it is being done correctly.

The exhibition will be open daily from 7 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., with extended hours during evening performances and special events. Regular gallery admission is free, although certain comedy, drag, burlesque and closing-night programs require advance tickets.

Moby’s Coffee & Tea Co. is located at 10513 Burbank Boulevard in North Hollywood, California. While the primary public event schedule runs from August 2 through August 15, organizers list the broader exhibition period as extending from August 1 through August 16.

For two weeks in North Hollywood, the dream is not hiding inside a mansion in Westchester. It is sitting inside a coffee shop, surrounded by art, community and enough mutant energy to make Cerebro start smoking.
