THE SMART DIVISION #1 Review: The Perfect Murder Just Got an AI Upgrade

WEPA! Artificial intelligence has officially moved beyond writing awkward emails and generating questionable profile pictures. In The Smart Division #1, somebody may have used predictive AI to help commit the perfect murder, forcing the FBI to create its first unit dedicated to crimes involving artificial intelligence. That is one hell of a hook, and writer Zack Kaplan wastes little time turning it into a dark, paranoid detective thriller.

The investigation pairs veteran FBI agent Will Bailey with Stevie Larque, a young cybercrime savant whose route into federal law enforcement was anything but traditional. Will is cynical, exhausted and deeply familiar with institutional failure. Stevie is brilliant, impulsive and capable of spotting technological patterns most investigators would miss. Their personalities clash immediately, but that friction gives the book its spark. These homies do not feel like a polished television partnership yet. They feel like two difficult ass people forced into the same car, each convinced the other one is going to wreck it.

Their first case centers on the murder of Mae Santos, a contractor connected to Fusion, a technology company developing a language model designed to analyze criminal cases. The frightening possibility is that someone reversed the program’s purpose. Instead of using AI to solve crimes, they may have used it to predict how investigators would respond, eliminate evidence and stay several steps ahead of law enforcement.

Zack handles the premise with enough detail to make it convincing without burying the story beneath technical jargon. A few conversations kinda get dense as the characters explain Fusion’s system and Mae’s involvement, but the mystery remains easy to follow. The story works best when Will and Stevie are challenging one another, combining his understanding of human motive with her ability to recognize digital manipulation. That partnership gives the concept a human center and keeps the issue from becoming a lecture about technology.

John Pearson’s artwork brings a grimy, painterly edge to the near-future setting. This is not a shiny science-fiction world filled with spotless laboratories and chrome robots. John fills the pages with bruised colors, rough textures and uneasy shadows. The crime scenes feel cold and isolated, while the later explosion tears through the book in violent oranges and reds. His layouts also reinforce the investigation, using narrow panels, scattered documents and fragmented imagery to make every scene feel like another incomplete piece of evidence.

Some distant character faces become slightly loose, which can make quick visual identification harder in a few panels. Still, Pearson’s style gives the series a distinct personality. The book looks anxious, damaged and unpredictable, exactly how a story about technology outgrowing human control should feel.

Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou’s lettering keeps the dialogue-heavy pages moving smoothly. The balloons guide the eye through Pearson’s unconventional layouts, and the sound effects blend naturally into the artwork instead of sitting on top of it. That clarity becomes especially important during the final sequence, when fire, debris and panic send the investigation in a much more dangerous direction.

The Smart Division #1 delivers a strong opening case, an intriguing investigative duo and an AI threat that feels disturbingly believable. The issue does occasionally slow down while explaining its technology, but the central mystery and combustible character chemistry keep it moving. Kaplan, Pearson and Otsmane-Elhaou have built a smart cyber-noir thriller that understands the scariest machine is not one trying to replace humanity. It is one that already knows exactly how humanity will behave.
