WEPAAAAAAAA! INDIE COMICS CRUSADERS, THIS IS THE KIND OF LEVEL-UP WE LOVE TO SEE!
When an independent comic builds its audience one supporter at a time, you pay attention. When that same creator-owned universe turns its crowdfunding momentum into an actual publishing imprint with IDW Publishing? BABY, now we’re talking about the long game!
White Ash Comics, the fantasy-driven comics company behind the White Ash universe, is joining IDW with a dedicated imprint. The brand has raised more than $1 million through Kickstarter, according to the announcement. Now the team is moving beyond its crowdfunding-first model to bring remastered editions and new stories into comic shops and bookstores.
The universe begins in a struggling coal-mining town where fantasy, romance and supernatural secrets are woven into everyday life. That collision between familiar small-town pressures and larger-than-life mythology is a smart foundation for an expanding line. You get the intimacy of a community and the possibility of a world much bigger than anybody first suspects.
Writer and publisher Charlie Stickney began building the property a decade ago alongside artist Conor Hughes and colorist Fin Cramb. The new partnership will present the stories in their originally intended format, with remastered material and bonus stories. And let’s give credit where it’s due: an indie universe doesn’t survive on a concept alone. It takes art, color, design, production, editorial leadership and a readership willing to invest in a story before a major publisher shows up. That’s the grind behind the headline.
WHITE ASH #1 launches as an ongoing series in April 2027, followed by THE GAME #1 in June. Starting in September 2027, the imprint plans a regular slate of limited series, beginning with GLARIEN: SHORT AND DEADLY.
Stickney remains at the helm, while Hughes becomes Chief Creative Officer. Nicole D’Andria leads editorial, Tango heads design, and Travis Escarfullery oversees production. That infrastructure matters if the goal is to sustain multiple titles rather than just make a big splash with one launch.
Listen, Comic Crusaders has always believed independent creators deserve a bigger stage. This deal illustrates a path that more creators dream about: build your world, prove your audience exists and find a partner that can help you reach readers who may never have discovered the Kickstarter.
There are challenges, of course. Moving to a steady direct-market schedule is different from fulfilling individual campaigns. Retailers, readers and creators all need consistency. But if this team can keep its original voice while expanding distribution, it could be a terrific case study in creator-owned growth.
A million-dollar indie success story turning into a publishing imprint? That’s not just news—it’s a reminder that building your own audience can open serious doors. Salute to Stickney, Hughes, Cramb and the whole White Ash team. KEEP BUILDING, BABY! WEPAAAA!
