Crusaders, forty issues is a serious run in the current comics market, and Tom King and Daniel Sampere are bringing theirs to a close with Wonder Woman #40. DC is billing the December issue as the grand finale of the year-long Wonder War and the conclusion of a creative stretch that pushed Diana through exile, rebellion, motherhood, war and one hell of a fight over what Wonder Woman represents.

The final battle brings the Matriarch and her father, the Sovereign, together with a collection of violent villains determined to destroy Diana and everything she stands for. Wonder Woman will need her family beside her as the threat reaches the shores of Themyscira, giving King and Sampere one last massive stage for the political conflict, emotional pressure and widescreen superhero action that have defined the run.

Over these forty issues, the team introduced Trinity and the Sovereign to the DC Universe, recast Diana as an outlaw and revolutionary, and built a long-form story around power, propaganda and resistance. The run has never been shy about putting Wonder Woman through hell, but its strongest moments kept returning to the same question: what does Diana choose to be when institutions, enemies and public opinion all try to define her first?

Wonder Woman #40 is written by Tom King with interior art and the main cover by Daniel Sampere. David Nakayama, Julian Totino Tedesco and Jamie Hewlett provide variant covers, giving collectors several very different visual takes on the finale.

DC has already collected the road to this ending across Wonder Woman Vol. 1: Outlaw, Vol. 2: Sacrifice, Vol. 3: Fury and Vol. 4: The Island of Mice and Men, with the complete run set to span six collected editions. New readers have a clear path to catch up before the finale hits, while longtime readers get one final chapter with the team that reshaped Diana’s world for the modern era.

Collected editions shown in DC’s announcement include Outlaw, Sacrifice, Fury and The Island of Mice and Men, with two additional volumes completing the six-book set.

Wonder Woman #40 arrives in comic shops on December 16, 2026. Forty issues, a transformed status quo and a war for Themyscira all land here, fam. Now the only real question is whether King and Sampere can finish this run with the same ambition they brought to its biggest swings. The Crusade Never Ends!
