Great Scott! Bob Gale Opens the Vault for Three Editions of Back to the Future: The Complete Screenplay

·Al Mega

Insight Editions has partnered with Oscar-nominated screenwriter, producer, and Back to the Future co-creator Bob Gale to give fans an unprecedented journey inside the making of one of the most beloved movies ever created.

Arriving this fall, Back to the Future: The Complete Screenplay reproduces the film’s complete shooting script from Gale’s personal copy, with detailed annotations accompanying every individual page. The 348-page hardcover will be released across three editions, allowing casual readers, film historians, aspiring screenwriters, and die-hard collectors to experience the same remarkable behind-the-scenes material at different levels of presentation.

This is far more than a screenplay printed between two covers. Gale takes readers through the creative decisions, revisions, production challenges, and unexpected detours that transformed an ambitious time-travel comedy into a pop-culture landmark. A foreword by director and co-writer Robert Zemeckis adds another essential voice from the team that sent Marty McFly racing back to 1955.

The book faithfully reproduces the final shooting script using the different colored revision pages circulated during production. Readers can trace how individual scenes evolved while filming was underway, gaining a rare look at the constant problem-solving required to keep this cinematic time machine moving.

Each page of the 147-page screenplay is paired with Gale’s commentary, movie stills, concept artwork, storyboards, production photography, and other archival visuals. Together, these elements create a guided tour through the film’s development, from its earliest concepts and demanding shooting schedule to the creative decisions that shaped the finished movie.

Among the most fascinating inclusions are side-by-side comparisons involving footage from the version filmed with Eric Stoltz before Michael J. Fox took over the role of Marty McFly. The collection also features rarely seen storyboards, newly rediscovered unit photography, and previously unpublished reproductions of set designs.

Yo, this is not some lightweight anniversary cash grab with a logo slapped on the cover. Gale is pulling the hood off the DeLorean and showing readers how every wire, joke, revision, character beat, and cinematic gamble helped make the engine run.

The standard Trade Edition presents the complete annotated screenplay as an 8.5-by-11-inch deluxe hardcover. Priced at $60, it delivers the full 348-page experience and will be available through bookstores beginning October 20, 2026. The Trade Edition carries ISBN 9798337400044.

Collectors looking to go deeper can choose the $250 Collector’s Edition, an elegant slipcased package featuring the hardcover quarter-bound in textured Wibalin paper and metallic silver cloth. The exterior is debossed with silver and blue foil and finished with three tip-on images, giving the set the appearance of a premium production archive.

The Collector’s Edition also includes a separate facsimile of the original working screenplay housed inside its own protective slipcase. This faithful reproduction preserves the multicolored revision pages used during filming, allowing readers to experience the document as it appeared while the movie was being made. Carrying ISBN 9798337407395, the Collector’s Edition is available for preorder now and will begin shipping after September 1, 2026.

At the top of the lineup is the $400 Limited Edition, restricted to only 500 signed and individually numbered copies. It includes the premium slipcased hardcover, the complete collection of annotated pages and rare production artwork, and the separate facsimile screenplay. Each facsimile is hand-signed by Gale on the cover, making every set a uniquely collectible piece of Back to the Future history.

The Limited Edition carries ISBN 9798337401294 and is available for preorder now, with shipping scheduled to begin September 1, 2026. Both the Collector’s and Limited Editions are available exclusively through Insight Editions and the official Back to the Future website.

Across all three editions, the heart of the experience remains Gale’s intimate examination of the movie’s creation. His annotations offer a screenwriter’s-eye view into the story behind the story, revealing how ideas changed, how production realities reshaped the screenplay, and how one of cinema’s most carefully constructed adventures survived a famously turbulent journey to the screen.

For generations of movie fans, Back to the Future has remained a nearly perfect piece of cinematic clockwork. Characters, jokes, visual details, and seemingly minor decisions all return with greater meaning as the story unfolds. The new screenplay collection lets readers examine that structure from the inside while hearing directly from one of the architects who built it.

Aspiring writers can study how a legendary screenplay evolved under real production pressure. Film historians can dig into rare archival materials and one of Hollywood’s most dramatic casting changes. Collectors can choose between three thoughtfully produced editions, while longtime fans can revisit Hill Valley with a guide who knows exactly where every road leads.

More than four decades after Marty McFly first hit 88 miles per hour, Back to the Future continues racing through popular culture without losing an ounce of momentum. Back to the Future: The Complete Screenplay celebrates that legacy by doing something even better than looking backward. It reveals how the future was written in the first place.

Bob Gale is an Oscar-nominated screenwriter and producer best known as the co-creator, co-writer, and co-producer of Back to the Future and its sequels. He has written more than 30 screenplays, with additional film credits including 1941, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, Used Cars, Trespass, and Interstate 60. His work in comics includes stories featuring Spider-Man, Batman, and the characters of Back to the Future.
