Kaeru Utagawa’s mesmerizing long-form manga debut arrives from Nakama Press this December, inviting readers into a dreamscape where forgotten lives refuse to stay buried
Some dreams vanish the moment you open your eyes. Others have been waiting centuries for someone to remember them.
Mad Cave Studios and its global comics imprint, Nakama Press, are preparing to lead readers deep into the supernatural with Yashirojima: The Forest of Lost Dreams, the haunting long-form manga debut from emerging mangaka Kaeru Utagawa, with lettering by Book Buddy Media.
Blending Japanese folklore, reincarnation, historical fiction, and intimate character drama, the 216-page graphic novel follows a sleeping boy whose dreams become doorways into lives that came before his own. What begins as a journey through memory soon stirs something far older and more dangerous within the surrounding forest.
Deep among the trees, a young boy named Yuta sleeps and drifts through visions of past lives and countless reincarnations. His dreams carry him across pivotal moments in Japanese history, revealing fragments of identities, experiences, and emotions lost to time. Unfortunately for Yuta, he is not the only presence wandering through those memories. His dreaming begins to awaken the spirits, demons, and unseen forces that have lingered in the forest for generations.
Yeah, sleeping in late usually gets you a missed alarm and a cold cup of coffee. Yuta gets centuries of unresolved supernatural business knocking at the door.
Originally published in French by Vega-Dupuis, Yashirojima: The Forest of Lost Dreams marks Utagawa’s first long-form graphic narrative. The upcoming Nakama Press edition will also introduce the mangaka’s work to readers beyond Europe and Japan for the first time.
Utagawa brings a delicate, expressive visual approach to a story built from classical mythology and contemporary fantasy. The artwork captures both the beauty and quiet danger of the forest, allowing historical imagery, personal memories, and supernatural encounters to flow together with the unpredictable rhythm of a dream.
Rather than treating Japanese history as simple background decoration, Yashirojima uses it as part of Yuta’s emotional and spiritual journey. Every glimpse into another life expands the mystery surrounding him, while every awakened spirit brings the past one step closer to the present.
Part historical odyssey and part supernatural fever dream, the manga explores identity, memory, reincarnation, and the invisible connections that bind generations together. It is a story about the lives people leave behind, the dreams that keep those lives alive, and the possibility that history never truly disappears.
Yashirojima: The Forest of Lost Dreams goes on sale December 15, 2026, in paperback for $10.99. The volume carries the ISBN 978-1-5458-3288-2 and will be available through local comic shops, bookstores, and Nakama Press.
If your manga shelf has room for atmospheric fantasy, Japanese folklore, restless spirits, and mysteries that stretch across lifetimes, keep your eyes on this one. The forest is calling, Crusaders, and whatever is dreaming inside it is beginning to wake.
Nakama Press celebrates timeless storytelling traditions while embracing bold creative innovation, building bridges between cultures and connecting creators with readers around the world.
