TOHO Co., Ltd. has officially unveiled a brand-new trailer for the upcoming anime adaptation of Though I Am an Inept Villainess, giving fans a bigger look at the imperial court chaos ahead of the series premiere on July 12.
Based on Satsuki Nakamura’s critically acclaimed light novel and manga series, Though I Am an Inept Villainess pulls viewers into a vivid world of palace politics, shifting loyalties, and high-stakes survival. At the center of the story is Kou Reirin, an adored noblewoman whose life is thrown into absolute madness when she suddenly finds herself swapped into the body of Shu Keigetsu, a condemned villainess.
Yeah, that is not exactly a relaxing Tuesday.
The newly released trailer gives fans a fresh look at the explosive situation Reirin finds herself trapped in after becoming tangled in a dangerous conspiracy. Now forced to navigate the brutal rules of the imperial court from the body of someone everyone already despises, Reirin must deal with enemies, alliances, secrets, and the question of what true strength really means when the world is waiting for you to fall.
Along with the new footage, TOHO also revealed additional cast members who will help bring this royal web of drama to life. The newly announced voice talent includes Rei Igarashi, known for Eden of the East and Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, as Kou Kenshuu; Ai Kayano, known for KonoSuba, No Game No Life, and Anohana, as Shu Gabi; Mai Nakahara, known for Clannad, Higurashi When They Cry, and Fairy Tail, as Kin Seika; Inori Minase, known for Re, DanMachi, and The Quintessential Quintuplets, as Ran Houshun; and Yui Ishikawa, known for Attack on Titan, Violet Evergarden, and NieR, as Gen Kasui.
That is a stacked cast right there. The imperial court may be falling apart, but the voice booth is clearly operating at full power.
The trailer also confirms that the anime’s opening theme, “Sunny,” will be performed by acclaimed singer-songwriter milet. The series is directed by Mitsue Yamasaki, with series composition by Yoshiko Nakamura, character design by Ai Kikuchi, music by Yukari Hashimoto, and animation production by Doga Kobo.
Though I Am an Inept Villainess had previously been confirmed to stream on Crunchyroll, and TOHO has now confirmed additional global streaming plans. Disney+ and Hulu will stream the series in the United States and Europe, while Netflix will stream the series in Asia. Additional platforms are expected to be announced at a later date.
Before the full royal storm arrives, fans attending Anime Expo will get an early taste of the series during a special U.S. premiere panel hosted by TOHO Animation on July 4. The event will feature appearances from cast members Hana Hishikawa and Makoto Furukawa, giving anime fans a chance to step into the drama before the rest of the court officially assembles.
With its mix of body-swap intrigue, imperial politics, emotional stakes, and villainess energy, Though I Am an Inept Villainess is shaping up to be one of those series where every smile hides a secret, every alliance comes with a dagger, and every episode could have fans yelling, “Nah, I don’t trust that one.”
The trailer makes one thing clear: Reirin may be trapped in the body of a doomed villainess, but she is not going down quietly.
