Review: J Scott. Campbell Danger Girl 20th Anniversary
20 years! I mean 20 years! Where did the time go?
Way back in the 90’s, comic books were a slightly different breed. Thanks to Image, in a lot of ways, art had become the major attraction at the expense of stories. Amongst the art of Messrs Lee, McFarlane, Silvestri amongst others, J Scott. Campbell burst onto the scene, with a style that caricatures Art Adams, swapping out the heavy details for curves on top of curves.
Danger Girl in many ways epitomises the era, with the title characters getting into all sorts of scrapes, in all manner of tight outfits, tight spots drawn with tight pencils. The action orientated panels of the curvaceous crew shows what an expert in the field Scott Campbell actually is. Purists will no doubt bang on about the anatomy, or lack of it, on show or the fact the girls find themselves in positions that would cause an up roar in today’s asexual preferred imagery brought to us in some of the books published by the Big Two.
This anniversary book is one for the fans. It features a black and white version of Danger Girl Preview and Danger Girl #1 that also has no words. This is a chance for the reader to get, essentially, an unfettered, all access pass to what Scott Campbell created way back then. It’s a great way to enjoy the process of how comics are put together. Following that, you get the same issues featuring the story by Scott Campbell and Andy Hartnell with the latter also providing the script. With words added, you can see how the context of the book changes. Also, as the panels are colored, there are a couple of artistic surprises, at least based on the original pencils.
For fans of cheesecake and action, this book is something of a throwback. If you are a J. Scott Campbell fan than this book is certainly going to be of interest to you. On the other hand, if you just like action packed stories featuring stunning art, with glamorous settings and even more glamorous  girls, then pick this up and lament that there are no longer any new issues.
