Review: Oblivious #1 A Story That Deserves Attention!

What happens when a super villain engages heroes in a battle to the brink of death? In the case of Oblivion, he ends up with a case of amnesia and becomes the title character in the new offering from Insane Comics; Oblivious. Will this become a second chance for a new life, or will he not be able to escape his past?

The comic takes place in New York City, in this new superhero universe co-created by Bobby Torres (writer) and Rowel Roque (artist). The solid writing of Torres drops readers right into the crescendo of a battle on Liberty Island where Oblivion has been engaged in combat with Hi-Rise, Atmos, and Cment. The results of this battle set the stage for this new ongoing series, as the heroes suffer a great loss, while the villain Oblivion seems to have been vanquished. After the dust settles, the seemingly helpless criminal struggles with reality.

This is a well thought out story that does a nice job of introducing readers to new characters. A lot of thought and planning seems to have been put into creating these characters and the execution of this first issue is top-notch. Gone are the traditional back stories, and what we receive is a new anti-hero who doesn“t even know who he is. For me, this surprising breath of fresh air was very well received.

Artist Rowell Roque, from the first page of the story, shows why they were born to draw comics. The detail shown in the opening panel, with Oblivion working his way out from under the rubble of Lady Liberty is magnificent. All of the heroes, villains, and other characters who are introduced in this comic seem to be created with a long-term view of a larger universe being introduced in the future.

Insane Comics has something that looks like it can be really special on their hands with the new comic Oblivious. It“s a well written new hero universe, with a super villain as the title character who seems to be set up to deal with some internal demons in the upcoming issues. For any fan of cape books, this is a new series worth checking out.
