CONVENTION Review: SC Comic-Con 2018

I don’t have the option of traveling very far for conventions, so I’m pleased that there’s a Comic-Con an hour away from my residence. Even though I was only there one out of the two days, I still had a blast! I may not have much to compare it too, but what I do know is that I had fun.

I rather enjoyed SC Comic-con this year. There were some nice Funko Pops (yes I’m that guy) and comics, and merchandise (but not the kind to shorten to merch). There were also some cool cosplay. I thought “People aren’t as weird this year as last year.” I thought to myself. “Wait a minute… Maybe I’ve just gotten weirder.” Weird is certainly not always a bad thing, and can sometimes be the brilliance of a unique personality. I seem to be stepping closer to a certain kind of fan-base. In this day and age, it’s weirder to be ordinary anyway.

I saw what may be the best cosplay that I have ever seen in my life. There was an amazing Groot cosplay. It was so creatively designed. It came out really cool. The thought that was put into the costume was amazing. It must’ve taken him/her a long time, just to come up with the design. Part of me was tempted to get a selfie with Groot, but considering the cosplayer was taking selfies with people 24/7, I felt sorry for ol’ Groot. I settled on taking crappy photos in passing. I felt sorry for the cosplayer in a way. Groot was constantly getting pictures with people (Which speaks volumes about how good it was). I witnessed the pain of being too good at cosplay in action.

I enjoy the fact that it’s a family-friendly convention. Seeing families in attendanceÂ and sometimes even cosplayingÂ together was awesome. Last year there wereÂ some not so family-friendly hiccups, but after being addressed they seemed to have fixed the problem. Comics should be for everyone and that includes children. It was a pleasure to see fans of all ages enjoying the Comic-Con.

One disappointment was the lack of a certain Green Lantern writer. Originally, writer, RobertÂ Venditti was supposed to be there, but shortly before going to the con I found out the unfortunate news. Venditti was no longer slated to be attending. Even though I understand and respect a professional’s busy schedule, I still wish he had been there. Maybe next year Rob. (Can I call you Rob?)

I haven’t been to any big cons, but I can tell you that I enjoyed this small one. It’s a young con, but a fast-growing convention. It improved from last years’ and I expect it to improve next year. SC Comic-con seems to be heading forward in the right direction.

Vendors were nice, cosplay was legit, and I satisfied my spending limit. From what I noticed the people around me seemed to be thoroughlyÂ enjoying themselves. Even the people working stands seemed to be having fun. Overall it was a grand time, and I’d like to go again in 2019.
