Mark Russell Talks Firefly #1 | Comic Crusaders Podcast #759

WEPA! Mi gente, Comic Crusaders Podcast #759 is taking flight, and this time we’re boarding one of the most beloved ships in science fiction with writer Mark Russell.

Mark joins me to talk about Dynamite Entertainment’s new Firefly #1, created with artist Lorenzo Re, and what it means to step into a universe that fans have been carrying in their hearts for decades. Dynamite officially lists Russell as writer, Re as artist, and positions the new series as a fresh adventure aboard Serenity.

This new chapter finds Mal Reynolds once again scrambling to keep Serenity in the air, while Simon and Kaylee are forced to pose as a married couple during a heist. Because this is Firefly, things obviously do not stay simple for long, especially when an old caper comes back around and starts causing problems for the crew.

That setup gives us plenty to dig into with Mark. We talk about writing Mal Reynolds without simply copying what audiences remember from television, translating the crew’s chemistry and comedic timing into comics, and figuring out how to make a new Firefly story feel familiar without becoming trapped by nostalgia.

We also get into the larger challenge of writing characters with a hardcore fanbase. Mark has worked with some very recognizable properties throughout his career, and Firefly brings its own kind of pressure. There is a difference between writing a cool space western and writing this space western, where every character already has a distinct rhythm and generations of fans know exactly how they are supposed to feel.

A big part of the conversation also focuses on Mark’s collaboration with Lorenzo Re and how comics can recreate the awkward pauses, reactions, movement and character interplay that made Firefly work so well on screen. Re comes into this new series following work on The Terminator, while Russell’s credits include Superman: Space Age and Batman: Dark Age.

We get into Mark’s creative process, what he looks for when entering an established universe, where humor fits into the story, and how he balances bigger ideas with characters just trying to survive another day.
