MICHAEL TOVE PROVES IT’S NEVER TOO LATE WITH YARD $ALEing | COMIC CRUSADERS PODCAST #766
·Al Mega

WEPA, Crusaders! Michael Tove joins me for Comic Crusaders Podcast #766, and this conversation is as much about refusing to give up on something as it is about making a movie.
Michael is the writer-producer behind Yard $aleing, a mystery/thriller directed by Tom Logan and starring Georgia Van Cuylenburg, Liam Bradford, Eric Roberts and Eliza Roberts. The setup is beautifully simple: a young couple buys a locked box at a yard sale, hoping they’ve stumbled onto a hidden treasure, only to discover that their five-dollar bargain comes attached to something considerably more dangerous.
Michael’s road to that film took decades. His love for unpredictable storytelling goes back to O. Henry and The Twilight Zone, but life took him through biology, financial planning and a career far removed from Hollywood. An early experience as a featured extra on the 1990 film adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale gave him his first real taste of filmmaking, and the desire to tell his own stories never completely disappeared.
Eventually, persistence and relationships brought Michael back to the screenplay he’d been trying to get onto a screen. Veteran filmmaker Tom Logan came aboard, the production took shape in San Diego, and Michael finally experienced something he’d spent years imagining: actors performing words he’d written. That collaboration also brought Eric and Eliza Roberts into the film, while Georgia Van Cuylenburg and Liam Bradford became the couple at the center of the mystery.
Yard $aleing has since developed an extensive festival résumé, with current records showing recognition for the short itself as well as its screenplay, direction and performances. Michael isn’t treating that success like a retirement party, either. Recent interviews have him discussing additional projects, including new screenplays and other filmmaking ideas.
We get into the long journey, Michael’s obsession with twist endings, what he learned from Tom Logan, working with Eric and Eliza Roberts, that wild 87,000-submission casting story, and what finally making the movie taught him about starting something creative later in life.
