PJ Donahoe Talks POWERLESS and Reinventing Superheroes | GeekFest/Comic Crusaders Special 2026

·Al Mega

PJ Donahoe POWERLESS Comic Crusaders x GeekFest interview featuring Commander Comet

Superhero stories have spent decades asking how powerful somebody can become. Filmmaker PJ Donahoe went looking in the opposite direction with POWERLESS, asking what remains when the person everybody considers invincible suddenly cannot depend on the very thing that made him extraordinary.

Set against a stylized 1950s backdrop, POWERLESS follows Commander Comet, New York City’s celebrated superhero, as he quietly deals with the disappearance of his powers. The public still sees the cape, the confidence and the legend, but underneath that image is a man increasingly aware that the next punch, bullet or bad decision may actually hurt.

A dangerous hostage situation forces Commander Comet back into action, turning what could easily have been another superhero spectacle into something far more personal. The tension does not come from wondering whether the hero is powerful enough to win. It comes from knowing that everyone around him still believes he is.

That premise gives Donahoe plenty of room to play with ideas surrounding identity, masculinity, celebrity, fear and the pressure to continue projecting strength even when something inside has fundamentally changed.

Donahoe brings a broad filmmaking background into the project, working across cinematography, editing, documentary production and narrative filmmaking. Based in Cincinnati and a graduate of the University of Cincinnati’s Media Production program, his experience has included commercial and documentary work as well as time on larger productions, including Superman.

POWERLESS also carries the unmistakable energy of an independent production built by filmmakers who understand how to stretch resources without shrinking ambition. Its retro superhero imagery celebrates the visual language of classic comic-book champions while deliberately pulling apart the idea of the flawless hero underneath it.

During his appearance on the Comic Crusaders Podcast, Donahoe joins Al Mega to discuss where Commander Comet came from, why the 1950s became the perfect setting, balancing directing with his cinematography and editing instincts, navigating independent financing, building a filmmaking career outside Hollywood and what the festival journey has taught him.

The conversation also digs deeper into a question superhero storytelling continues to explore: are audiences becoming more interested in vulnerability than invincibility?

POWERLESS makes a strong case that the cape matters far less than the person underneath it.
