Film programmer, River Oaks Theatre Artistic Director and comic book writer Rob Saucedo joins Al Mega to talk monsters, movies, Texas weirdness and the surprisingly human heart beating inside his new graphic novel.

The full moon is rising over Comic Crusaders, and this time we’ve got one hell of a guest howling alongside us. Film programmer and comic book writer Rob Saucedo joins Al Mega on the Comic Crusaders Podcast to celebrate the August 7 release of Curse of the Where Wolf, the long-awaited follow-up to his cult horror-comedy Where Wolf.

Saucedo’s road to comics is anything but ordinary. Long before Larry Chaney started worrying about becoming somebody’s furry nightmare, Saucedo had built a career championing movies. He spent 13 years with Alamo Drafthouse before becoming Artistic Director of Houston’s historic River Oaks Theatre, and in 2026 celebrated his 15th year working in film exhibition. His work has covered everything from programming and projection to film buying, marketing, budgeting and audience development.

That life watching stories connect with audiences eventually fed into storytelling of his own. Where Wolf began as a black-and-white webcomic through Fangoria before being collected by Encyclopocalypse Publications, introducing readers to reporter Larry Chaney and a gloriously ridiculous mystery involving murder, lycanthropy and a Texas furry convention.

Curse of the Where Wolf raises the stakes considerably. Larry wanted to become a hero. Instead, he became the monster. The sequel follows his desperate attempt to control his newfound powers, suppress an appetite that could put everyone around him on the menu and somehow find a cure before the curse consumes what’s left of him. Saucedo has described the new story as bigger, bloodier and funnier, but also more interested in the difficult work of becoming a better human being.

The conversation goes much deeper than monster mythology. Al and Rob talk about how film programming influences comic-book storytelling, the responsibility of keeping theatrical culture alive, why Texas remains such fertile ground for supernatural fiction and how collaborators Debora Lancianese and Jack Morelli helped expand the visual and emotional language of the series.

There’s also talk of the future. Saucedo has already suggested that additional installments could explore other Texas locations, with Austin potentially offering vampires and Houston eventually supplying something suitably nasty from its bayous. The existing property has also attracted an active film and television option involving producers Charles Horak and James Fino of Starburns Industries. And then we bring out the receipts.

Long before becoming known as a defender of cinematic oddities, Saucedo wrote a 2009 column in which he absolutely dismantled Howling III: The Marsupials. More than 15 years later, we ask the question history demands:

What the hell happened, Rob?!
