Sam Balcomb | You’re NOT Safe | GeekFest x Comic Crusaders Special

WEPA, Crusaders! Filmmaker Sam Balcomb joins Al Mega for another GeekFest x Comic Crusaders Special, and this time we’re getting uncomfortable with his horror short You’re Not Safe.

Sam is the co-founder of Rainfall Films and a filmmaker whose work stretches across directing, cinematography, visual effects, commercials and genre projects including Metroid: The Sky Calls and Evenveil. With You’re Not Safe, he’s taking all that experience and squeezing the tension into an eight-minute horror story that has been making its way through the 2026 festival circuit, including GeekFest Year 13.

We get into the idea behind You’re Not Safe, why short-form horror can be such a bastard to pull off, how Sam’s VFX background affects the way he approaches directing, and why knowing what not to show can sometimes be more important than whatever monster you can put on screen. We also talk GeekFest, independent filmmaking, building atmosphere on a limited clock and what Sam has cooking next.

We’re keeping the plot details light because that’s the whole damn point, fam. Watch the short when you get the chance, but first hit PLAY on our conversation with Sam Balcomb and get inside the mind of the filmmaker without having the experience spoiled for you.

Watch the full interview below, support independent genre filmmakers, and keep following GeekFest and Comic Crusaders for more conversations with the creators actually making this stuff happen.
