The powerhouse crew over at Titan Comics just dropped some serious news, and comic fans are about to feel the chill. Coming July 29, 2026, Titan is unleashing BLACK STAR, a brand-new five-issue gothic horror comic that marks the comic book debut of acclaimed actress Kristin Kreuk yes, that Kristin Kreuk from Smallville, Reacher, and Murder in a Small Town.
And trust me, this isn’t some celebrity vanity project. Kreuk teamed up with Peter Mooney (Rookie Blue, Mistletoe Murders) and screenwriter Eric Putzer, with haunting visuals brought to life by artist Joe Bocardo (Nightwalkers, The Hexiles). The result? A Northern Gothic noir soaked in horror, mystery, and a splash of wicked dark humor.
The story drops readers straight into the brutal chaos of the early 19th-century fur trade, where rival factions clash in a frozen world of blood, power, and survival. At the center of it all is Dashiell Carlyle, a man who suddenly discovers he possesses magical abilities and quickly learns he’s not the only one. Pulled into a secret order that dreams of reshaping the world with their power, Dashiell soon realizes that building a “better world” might demand a horrifying price.
This world is rough, gritty, and unforgiving snow, steel, and survival but it’s also filled with wonder, discovery, and strange magic lurking beneath the ice. The storytelling moves fast, the morality is deliciously grey, and the vibe is wild. Think The Revenant crashing headfirst into Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, but filtered through a gothic lens that’s uniquely its own.
Kristin Kreuk explained that the seeds for Black Star were planted while filming Burden of Truth in Winnipeg.
“Black Star was born while Peter, Eric, and I were filming in Winnipeg,” Kreuk shared. “We were inspired by the city’s lore and started imagining the magic pulsing beneath the surface something hidden that shapes the rhythms of the city and the battles happening just out of sight.”
Co-writer Peter Mooney says the strange energy of Winnipeg itself helped spark the story.
“Sometimes people visit my hometown and only see the rough edges or the brutal weather,” Mooney said. “But Kristin and Eric saw the strange magic that makes the place special. This story isn’t really an alternative history it’s more like a lost chapter that slipped through time. It’s bizarre, fantastical, and totally imagined… but somehow it explains a lot about why the city feels the way it does.”
For co-writer Eric Putzer, the comic format made the story even more powerful.
“There’s an intimacy to comics that no other medium really captures,” Putzer explained. “The reader controls the pacing, the breath, the moment of revelation. For a story about power and human nature, we wanted readers to feel like they were part of the exchange.”
Artist Joe Bocardo clearly knew he had something special on his hands.
“As a comic book artist, getting to work on something this ambitious and well-written is already incredible,” Bocardo said. “But working with such a talented and supportive team that gives you creative freedom? That’s not just a gift it’s a privilege.”
Titan Comics editor Jake Devine says readers should get ready for something haunting and unforgettable.
“Set in the eerie, snow-covered wilderness of early 19th-century Winnipeg, Black Star shows magic in a way readers have never seen before,” Devine said. “It’s hopeful yet bleak, miraculous yet dangerous. And Joe Bocardo’s artwork pulls you into a world filled with awe, tragedy, and dark beauty.”
The countdown is officially on.
BLACK STAR #1 arrives in comic shops and on digital platforms July 29, 2026, and if the early buzz is any sign, this gothic horror saga might just become one of the most talked-about new comics of the year.
