X-Men ’92: Incursions Pits Two Generations of Animated Mutants Against Each Other

Marvel is throwing gasoline on an argument X-Men animation fans have been having for decades. X-Men ’92: Incursions #1 puts the iconic ’90s animated team directly against the younger mutant heroes of X-Men: Evolution.

The January one-shot is written by Christopher Yost and Craig Kyle, the duo behind multiple X-Men: Evolution episodes including the debut of X-23, with art by Salva Espin. The story is part of Marvel’s Time Runs Out line of reality-smashing one-shots leading toward Secret Wars.

The setup forces the ’90s X-Men to save their world at the possible cost of another reality, one populated by younger versions of themselves who still believe in Xavier’s dream. That makes this more than a nostalgia fight. Marvel is putting two different generations of the franchise’s ideals on a collision course.

Newly revealed variants include artwork from X-Men: Evolution character designer and director Steve E. Gordon and Marvel Stormbreaker artist Gurihiru. Luciano Vecchio provides the main and mirror covers, with additional covers from Phil Noto.

WEPAAAA! Yo, Marvel really looked at two generations of animated X-Men fans and decided to start a family argument in the middle of a multiversal disaster. The ’90s crew and the Evolution team aren’t just different costume designs. They represent different moments in how an entire generation discovered mutants, Xavier’s dream and the messy business of trying to protect people who don’t always want protecting.

Putting Christopher Yost and Craig Kyle on the script gives this clash a connection to the Evolution era that goes deeper than a nostalgia reference. These writers know what made those younger mutants tick, and the premise puts that idealism up against the brutal calculation of saving one world at another’s expense. That’s a nasty choice for any X-Man, especially when the faces on the other side look so familiar.

The cover lineup is a celebration of both eras, too. Steve E. Gordon’s involvement speaks directly to Evolution fans, while Gurihiru, Luciano Vecchio and Phil Noto bring their own visual flavor. Everybody loves a good animated-universe showdown, fam, but this one has a bigger question underneath all the mutant fireworks: what happens to Xavier’s dream when survival demands a sacrifice?

X-Men ’92: Incursions #1 arrives January 6, 2027.
