COMIC CRUSADERS HOT LIST: THE 10 HOTTEST COMICS FOR AUGUST 11 & 12, 2026

·Al Mega

Absolute Clayface has entered the building. Miles Morales is starting over at #1. Kylo Ren is digging deeper into the darkness. Gargoyles are back. Biker Mice are riding again. And the indie rack? Maaaaan, the indie rack came looking for smoke this week.

WEPAAAA, Crusaders! Welcome back to the Comic Crusaders HOT List, where we separate the books simply occupying shelf space from the comics walking into your LCS wearing sunglasses indoors because they already KNOW everybody is looking at them.  The August 11 and 12 week is loaded, with Key Collector tracking roughly 86 new releases for Wednesday alone across Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, IDW, BOOM!, Dynamite, Oni and the rest of the comic-book multiverse. But you already know the rules around here. We ain’t giving everybody a participation trophy. Ten books. That’s it.

This list is built around the whole ecosystem: reader excitement, collector potential, speculation, covers and incentives, first-issue energy, character developments, creator pedigree, franchise fandom and that impossible-to-measure little ingredient called “Yo… people are gonna be asking for this book.” Speculation is speculation, nobody has a crystal ball hiding behind the long boxes, so collect what you love first. But when there’s smoke coming off the racks, Comic Crusaders is gonna tell you where the fire might be.

#10 – BATMAN & ROBIN: YEAR ONE – DYNAMIC DUOS #1

DC Comics | Mark Waid & Chris Samnee | On Sale August 12, 2026
HOT METER: 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Batman books don’t automatically get free admission into the HOT List, because if we did that this article would become the Gotham City Gazette every Wednesday. But Mark Waid and Chris Samnee returning to the early days of Batman and Robin deserves attention. This is a new 12-issue series following their previous Batman and Robin: Year One work, and reader chatter is already carrying some serious goodwill from fans who dug that run. DC is also feeding collectors a Marc Silvestri variant, Dustin Nguyen and Hayden Sherman covers, plus a Greg Capullo Dark Knight Returns 40th-anniversary piece. That’s a respectable buffet right there.

This isn’t here because I’m expecting some random dude named “The Pigeon” to debut on page 17 and suddenly pay everybody’s mortgage. This is prestige-creator heat combined with Batman and Robin fandom, a fresh #1 and a proven creative pairing. Sometimes the hottest comic is simply the book people actually cannot wait to read. Crazy concept, right?

#9 – YUMI: 00-EX #1

Image Comics | Doug Wagner & Daniel Hillyard | On Sale August 12, 2026
HOT METER: 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Now THIS is the kind of indie insanity that makes the HOT List fun. Yumi: 00-EX comes screaming out of Image as a four-issue spy-action series involving a lethal heroine, a missing MI6 boyfriend and, because apparently regular getaway cars are for cowards, an AI-controlled Lamborghini weapon of mass destruction. Image itself is pitching the flavor somewhere between Kingsman and KPop Demon Hunters, which is an absolutely ridiculous elevator pitch… and I mean that as a compliment. Comics Heating Up also flagged this as one of its new-series picks for the week.

Collector radar gets another nudge from a cover lineup that includes variants by Alessio Baldari, Taurin Clarke/Silva depending on edition listings, Mirka Andolfo and a blank cover, while anticipation lists for Image’s August slate have already singled the series out. This is classic new-IP lottery-ticket territory. Original concept, Image #1, loud visuals, easy-to-explain premise. If it connects with readers, you’ll want to remember where it started.

#8 – CULT-DE-SAC #1

Ignition Press | Cullen Bunn & Fico Ossio | On Sale August 12, 2026
HOT METER: 🔥🔥🔥🔥

An evil homeowners association. That’s it. That’s the horror story. We can go home now. 🤣

Seriously though, Cullen Bunn taking suburban anxiety, cult behavior and neighborhood politics and throwing them into the horror blender with Fico Ossio is the kind of premise that can catch fire through word of mouth. Cult-De-Sac #1 follows a family discovering that their picturesque new community has some deeply sinister rules hiding behind the manicured lawns. Comics Heating Up put it among its new-series picks for August 12, and the launch arrives with multiple covers and retailer incentives including work from Aneke and Patricia Martín, plus a Philip Tan exclusive in the wider variant mix.

Bunn has a built-in horror audience, Ossio brings visual electricity, and creator-owned horror continues to be one of the easiest places for an underordered #1 to become tomorrow’s “Damn, my shop doesn’t have any left?” book. I’m watching this one closely. The neighborhood association might fine you for leaving your garbage cans outside, but hopefully they don’t fine us for buying multiple covers.

#7 – BIKER MICE FROM MARS: SCORCH #1

Oni Press | Matt Hotson & V Ken Marion | On Sale August 12, 2026
HOT METER: 🔥🔥🔥🔥½

OOOOOH, my ’90s babies just sat upright.

Oni and the Nacelle crew are expanding Biker Mice From Mars with Scorch’s first solo #1, and there is a very important collector distinction here: this is NOT Scorch’s first comic-book appearance. She previously appeared in Biker Mice From Mars #8. What makes this issue interesting is the solo spotlight combined with Scorch’s larger push across the revived franchise, including plans for animation and toys. That’s the kind of cross-media setup collectors pay attention to because somebody somewhere is already whispering the sacred words: “What if this character blows up?”

Then Oni poured gasoline on the collector side. Alongside standard covers, we’re getting Simon Bisley 1:20 and 1:50 incentives, including a 1:50 full-art version. Nostalgia, a character being positioned for broader exposure, a solo #1 and Bisley ratio covers? Yeah, now you’re talking my language. Just don’t let some dude on Whatnot scream “FIRST APPEARANCE!” at you while ringing a bell. Comic Crusaders checked the homework.

#6 – QUEEN IN BLACK: THOR #1

Marvel Comics | Al Ewing & Sergio Dávila | On Sale August 12, 2026
HOT METER: 🔥🔥🔥🔥½

Al Ewing plus cosmic Marvel mythology is already enough to make me start reading the solicitation twice. Throw Thor, Hela, Beta Ray Bill and the ongoing Queen in Black mythology into the pot and now we’re cooking with Asgardian gasoline.

InvestComics placed Queen in Black: Thor #1 among its five key comics to watch this week because this isn’t merely another event tie-in. The speculative juice surrounds the status of Sigurd Jarlson, the unfolding transformation mythology and whatever consequences Ewing may plant involving Thor and Beta Ray Bill. None of that guarantees a monster key, but event one-shots and miniseries launching meaningful status-quo developments have a funny habit of becoming books nobody cared about until six months later when suddenly everybody cares.

There’s also a Peach Momoko variant in the mix, which never hurts collector visibility. This is the kind of Marvel book I call a “read the damn issue before dismissing it” comic. Sometimes the important stuff isn’t printed in 72-point letters on the solicitation.

#5 – GARGOYLES #1

Dynamite Entertainment | Greg Weisman & Gerardo Gambone | On Sale August 12, 2026
HOT METER: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

BROOOO. Gargoyles fans do not play.

Greg Weisman is back guiding the property he helped create, this time with artist Gerardo Gambone, and the new ongoing series jumps back into the 1997 continuity with Demona, the Manhattan Clan and the kidnapping of the clan’s newest egg, “Egwardo,” driving the story. Weisman has described this as material that’s been brewing for decades while also positioning the series as an accessible jumping-on point. For a fandom that has spent years keeping this universe alive through sheer loyalty, that’s major fuel.

And Dynamite understood the assignment on the collectible side. We’re talking a huge variant program, including covers by Meghan Hetrick, Drew Moss, Frank Paur and Sebastian Piriz, plus blind bags containing three comics with possibilities including line art, foil, metal and other surprise versions. Blind bags can be gimmicky, absolutely, but when the property has nostalgic fanatics attached to it? That becomes crack for completionists. This one has nostalgia, creator authenticity, a #1 on the cover and a company actively feeding the collector hunt.

#4 – REGICIDE #1

Image Comics | Patrick Kindlon & Ludovic Lalliat | On Sale August 12, 2026
HOT METER: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Here comes the indie assassin.

Regicide #1 is being pitched as dark fantasy with shades of “Dracula meets Berserk,” and unlike the giant IP books surrounding it this week, nobody knows where the ceiling is because we’re watching an original creator-owned mythology start from page one. InvestComics put Regicide among its five key books of the week specifically because #1 establishes the principal characters, mythology and world, while Comics Heating Up selected it as its small-press pick for August 12. Two different speculation radars pointing at the same indie? Now my eyebrow goes up.

And this is why I love creator-owned #1s. You’re not buying the 947th appearance of somebody whose first appearance costs the GDP of a small island. You’re buying the actual ground floor. Will Hollywood call? Who knows. Will the story catch fire? We find out together. But if you’re looking for the sleeper candidate of the week, Regicide is standing in the corner quietly sharpening a sword while everybody else is yelling about Batman. Keep your eye on this one.

#3 – STAR WARS: THE FALL OF KYLO REN #1

Marvel Comics | Charles Soule & Will Sliney | On Sale August 12, 2026
HOT METER: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Kylo Ren collectors, come get your boy.

Charles Soule and Will Sliney reunite for another trip into Ben Solo’s fall, this time exploring territory positioned between previously established Kylo Ren stories and The Rise of Skywalker. That’s automatically interesting because canonical Star Wars comics live in a different speculation ecosystem. A new character, new Knight of Ren, previously unseen event, First Order revelation or connective piece of mythology can suddenly matter far outside the comic itself. InvestComics specifically highlighted the series this week for exactly that possibility.

Marvel also knows Star Wars collectors enjoy hunting covers like Jawas hunting unattended droids. The launch includes Phil Noto artwork alongside variants from Dave Dorman, Chris Sprouse, Luke Ross and others, giving both modern-cover and old-school Star Wars art collectors something to chase. The issue is confirmed for August 12 and arrives as one of the week’s biggest franchise #1s.

Don’t automatically assume “Star Wars #1 equals money.” We’ve all been around this galaxy long enough to know better. But Soule writing canon Kylo Ren material means I’m reading every new name and every suspicious hooded lunatic very carefully.

#2 – MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN #1

Marvel Comics | Bryan Edward Hill & Nico Leon | On Sale August 12, 2026
HOT METER: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥+

Miles Morales with a brand-new #1 in 2026? Come on, son. You knew this thing was going near the top.

Bryan Edward Hill and Nico Leon launch a fresh era for Miles, putting him back in the classic red-and-black while introducing a threat connected to Jefferson Morales’ past with S.H.I.E.L.D. Hill has already discussed bringing new villains and new allies into Miles’ world, and that’s where collector antennas start doing that little twitch. InvestComics specifically singled this issue out because the mysterious figure tied to Jefferson’s past could produce a new villain or other debut with longer-term significance. Notice the language: could. Until we read the book, anybody advertising a guaranteed mega-first is selling you seasoning without the chicken.

What we do know is that Miles has become one of Marvel’s genuine modern pillars. Movies, games, animation, toys, comics, kids coming into shops asking specifically for him, the whole machine is moving. A new #1 is therefore not some routine relaunch people forget before lunch. It becomes an accessible starting point, a variant magnet and a book with a huge built-in fan base. Key Collector lists the issue among the week’s major releases and tracks a sizeable variant lineup surrounding the launch.

If that new enemy turns into somebody Marvel keeps around? Different conversation. If not? You still bought the beginning of the next Miles Morales era. Either way, Miles is HOT.

#1 – ABSOLUTE BATMAN #23

DC Comics | Scott Snyder & Nick Dragotta | On Sale August 12, 2026
HOT METER: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT

Yeah. You already knew once we got this far.

ABSOLUTE CLAYFACE. FIRST FULL APPEARANCE.

Absolute Batman #23 is the book with the loudest combination of confirmed key potential, character heat, reader attention and collector speculation this week. Comics Heating Up made it its outright pick of the week and identifies #23 as the first full appearance of Absolute Clayface. CBR independently points to the issue as Clayface’s first full appearance in the Absolute Universe after earlier teasing of the character. This isn’t somebody on Facebook zooming into a background panel and declaring that a brown smudge is Clayface’s “true cameo.” We have multiple comic sources specifically identifying the issue as the full debut.

Then look at the machinery around it. Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta’s Absolute Batman has already become one of DC’s most visible modern books, and DC has stacked #23 with variants from Kaare Andrews, Juan Ferreyra, Jeff Spokes, Damion Scott and Gabriele Dell’Otto, including incentive and anniversary editions. The issue brings Batman face-to-face with this universe’s twisted interpretation of Clayface, which means we’re not merely hunting a costume change. We’re watching another major Batman rogue get rebuilt through the Absolute Universe’s funhouse mirror.

THIS is what the HOT List exists for. A genuinely popular series, a classic Batman villain getting a radical new incarnation, a first full appearance, serious cover options and enough speculation swirling around the book that shops may hear “You got any more Absolute Batman #23?” approximately forty-seven times before somebody finishes their coffee.

Could prices spike and cool? Of course. That’s comics. Don’t start refinancing the house because Basil Karlo learned some new tricks. But from the perspective of collectibility, fandom, chatter, immediate key significance and pure Wednesday-morning heat, Absolute Batman #23 is the king of the rack this week.

There it is, Crusaders. Another week, another ten books trying to empty our wallets while we pretend we’re “just stopping by the comic shop for one thing.” Sure you are. From Miles Morales and Kylo Ren to Scorch, Gargoyles, creator-owned killers like Regicide and the arrival of Absolute Clayface, August 12 is one of those Wednesdays where the mainstream and indie racks are BOTH throwing punches.

As always, hunt smart. Don’t let manufactured FOMO make the decisions for you, don’t pay stupid money Wednesday morning because somebody yelled “KEY!” into a YouTube thumbnail, and most importantly, read these damn comics. Collecting is fun, speculation is fun and finding that sleeper before everybody else is REALLY fun, but the stories are still what keep this whole beautiful, ridiculous hobby alive.

See you at the racks, mi gente.

THE CRUSADE NEVER ENDS! 🔥
