Crusaders, lock down those pull lists, check the couch cushions, and prepare to make some financially questionable decisions because this week’s comic shelves are coming in hotter than a subway platform in July!
The July 28 and July 29 release window is stacked with symbiote royalty, cinematic crossovers, radioactive nightmares, serial-killing art collectors, celebrity creators, sinister superheroes, and enough incentive covers to make completionists start sweating through their short boxes. Every title on this list has been checked against current publisher information and retailer release schedules, with the selected books carrying confirmed July 29 on-sale dates.
As always, the Comic Crusaders HOT List is not based on which company bought the biggest billboard. We are looking at collector potential, franchise power, reader chatter, creative teams, milestone moments, variant structures, sleeper possibilities, and that undeniable comic-shop electricity that makes a book feel important before the tape is even cut on the box. Ten comics. No filler. No participation trophies. Let’s get into the heat!
10. THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO #1
Publisher: AMP Comics / Massive Publishing
On Sale: July 29, 2026
Heat Level: Nostalgia-powered sleeper
Believe it or not, Ralph Hinkley is flying back into comic shops, although longtime fans know that “flying” might be a generous description of what Ralph usually does in that suit.
This full retail launch brings the cult television hero back for a story centered on Ralph reconnecting with his son, facing one final mission, and confronting the possibility of making the ultimate sacrifice. Don Handfield and Alper Gecgel are tapping directly into the emotional core of the original series instead of simply dropping Ralph into another goofy superhero adventure. The book arrives during the property’s 45th anniversary celebration, giving it a legitimate nostalgia hook beyond the usual licensed-comic noise.
Collectors have five covers to consider, including a 1:25 incentive edition, while an extremely limited metal convention edition adds another layer of scarcity surrounding the launch. This one may not dominate Wednesday morning conversations, but nostalgia books with recognizable television properties can quietly disappear while everyone is fighting over the obvious Marvel and DC releases. Do not underestimate the audience that grew up hearing that theme song every week. Gen X collectors remember, and nostalgia has been known to empty wallets faster than common sense.
9. THE DIRT BENEATH THE DEVIL #1
Publisher: Mad Cave Studios
On Sale: July 29, 2026
Heat Level: Western-horror first issue
Dan Panosian, David Ferracci, Lee Loughridge, and Pat Brosseau are riding into town with a grim western-horror story about June Buckley, a woman forced to return home and confront the monstrous legacy left behind by her father.
This is not shiny six-shooter superhero action. The early material promises a patient, nasty descent into inherited violence, buried secrets, and the kind of family history that should have stayed six feet underground. Panosian has the storytelling chops to make the slow burn hurt, while Ferracci and Loughridge appear ready to deliver a world covered in dust, blood, and bad decisions. Mad Cave has confirmed the July 29 release, and retailers are spotlighting the book as one of the week’s more intriguing horror launches.
There are four listed covers, but the dangerous collectible is the Becky Cloonan foil convention variant, limited to 500 copies. That does not automatically make it retirement-fund material, so relax, Gordon Gekko. It does, however, give a promising first issue an additional collector hook heading out of convention season. Western horror has become a reliable lane for indie readers. Strong word of mouth could turn this from a quiet pickup into one of Wednesday’s first legitimate sleeper books.
8. JUSTICE LEAGUE: KNIGHT VISION SPECIAL #1

Heat Level: DC Universe setup book
Batman and Lex Luthor working together is the comic-book equivalent of seeing two dudes who hate each other suddenly whispering in the corner. You already know something shady is cooking.
Written by Mark Waid and Joshua Williamson with artwork by Miguel Mendonça, this special deals with the dangerous power vacuum created by the villain amnesty program. A mysterious threat is developing a new weapon while an alien-technology arms deal unfolds in Slaughter Swamp, forcing Batman and Lex into an alliance that neither man should trust for more than five consecutive minutes. DC is positioning the special as a bridge into upcoming Justice League developments, making it more than a random side mission.
The book has a relatively controlled three-cover lineup, including a Mark Spears card-stock variant. The real speculation angle, however, is inside the issue. Mystery villains, advanced weapons, and stories designed to establish the next status quo are exactly where surprise identities, new designs, and future plot engines tend to appear. Read the interiors before screaming “first appearance” across social media. The internet already has enough people selling rumors with their whole chest.
7. THE PATRON #1
Publisher: Ignition Press
On Sale: July 29, 2026
Heat Level: Prestige indie sleeper
Christian Ward and John J. Pearson are entering the art world with a horror concept so twisted that it practically demands attention.
The story follows a serial killer who targets artists, knowing their deaths could increase the popularity and financial value of the work they leave behind. That is a mean, intelligent premise built around greed, exploitation, grief, and the uncomfortable relationship between tragedy and commercial success. Ward and Pearson developed the idea during a conversation about the art business, and that authenticity may give the series more bite than the average “killer stalks creative people” setup.
Ignition Press is supporting the debut with two open-order covers, a 1:10 Anand RK incentive, and a publisher-exclusive Tula Lotay edition. Only three standard-market variants are listed, which keeps the cover menu manageable compared with some of this week’s variant avalanches. There is also a separate convention edition limited to 500 copies floating around the collector ecosystem. This is the deep-cut selection of the week. Small publisher, killer concept, elite visual creators, and a low incentive ratio. That is how sleeper conversations begin.
6. NANO #1
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
On Sale: July 29, 2026
Heat Level: High-concept creator debut
Visual artist and philanthropist Alexandra Grant makes her jump into comics alongside acclaimed writer Matt Kindt and artist Natacha Bustos for a three-part science-fiction adventure that has already attracted attention beyond the traditional comic press.
The story follows Sana, an undercover operative hiding as a suburban physical-education teacher while her partner infiltrates the powerful Nanocorp. The series explores surveillance, authoritarian control, prison labor, technology, nature, and the conflict between scientific advancement and forces that may look suspiciously like magic. Grant has described the project as an idea that lived with her for years before becoming a comic, giving the series a genuine passion-project energy.
The first issue is a premium 56-page release priced at $8.99, with lettering by Sophia Hilmes. Unlike several books higher on this list, Nano is not leaning on two dozen covers to create noise. Its heat comes from the unusual creative partnership, Grant’s comic-book debut, Matt Kindt’s established audience, and the possibility of reaching readers outside the regular Wednesday crowd.
Collector Watch: Cross-media attention is the wildcard. When somebody with a following outside comics enters the medium, curiosity can move copies before the Wednesday warriors even realize what happened.
5. BLACK STAR #1
Publisher: Titan Comics
On Sale: July 29, 2026
Heat Level: Celebrity-created supernatural launch
Kristin Kreuk is stepping from the world of Smallville and Reacher into creator-owned comics, joining Peter Mooney and Eric Putzer with artist Joe Bocardo for a Northern Gothic story packed with magic, violence, and historical darkness.
Set during the early nineteenth-century fur trade, Black Star follows Dashiell Carlyle as he discovers supernatural abilities and becomes entangled with a secret order that claims it can build a better world. As every comic reader with functioning survival instincts already knows, anybody promising a perfect society while hiding in the shadows is probably preparing something horrifying in the basement.
Titan describes the series as a blend of noir, horror, dark humor, and science fiction. Martin Simmonds provides the primary cover, and seven variants are currently listed for the launch. Kreuk’s recognizable name will bring additional eyes, but the historical setting and occult-conspiracy hook give the book enough substance to stand without relying entirely on celebrity curiosity.
Collector Watch: This has adaptation-friendly DNA all over it, although that is an observation, not an announcement. Buy the story, enjoy the ride, and let Hollywood make its own phone calls.
4. FERAL #25
Publisher: Image Comics
On Sale: July 29, 2026
Heat Level: Milestone crossover madness
Tony Fleecs and Trish Forstner are celebrating Feral #25 by smashing their infected-cat nightmare directly into the world of Stray Dogs. Cute animals, brutal horror, emotional trauma, and the growing certainty that somebody’s favorite furry character is about to have a very bad Wednesday.
The oversized milestone concludes the current story arc while placing the Feral cats inside a CDC prison with the Stray Dogs, a serial killer, and a threat that may ensure not every animal makes it out alive. Image is promoting this as the team-up readers never expected, but anyone familiar with the creators’ shared horror universe knew this collision was eventually going to claw its way onto the page.
Milestone numbering, a crossover between two established casts, seven listed variants, and wraparound artwork give the issue multiple collector entry points. More importantly, Fleecs and Forstner have built a dedicated audience that actually reads these books, discusses the characters, and returns for the emotional punishment. That kind of fandom matters more than manufactured speculation.
Collector Watch: Milestone issue plus crossover plus popular horror franchise equals real shelf pressure. Somebody is definitely going to buy the adorable cover and discover emotional warfare inside.
3. THE HORROR OF GODZILLA [KAI-SEI ERA] #1
Publisher: IDW Publishing
On Sale: July 29, 2026
Heat Level: Radioactive franchise reinvention
Godzilla does not need another introduction. Godzilla needs buildings, terrified civilians, and enough room to remind humanity why running is sometimes the smartest available strategy.
Writers Ethan S. Parker and Griffin Sheridan join artist Tristan Jones for a four-issue prequel set during the first Godzilla attack in IDW’s connected Kai-Sei Era. Set in Tokyo in 1954, the series strips away heroic safety nets and approaches the King of the Monsters as an unstoppable horror presence. IDW has openly positioned the book for readers who responded to the terror and devastation of Godzilla Minus One, Shin Godzilla, and the original 1954 film.
The launch carries 13 listed variants, including a 1:25 Patrick Horvath full-art cover, a 1:50 Tristan Jones black-and-white incentive, and an IDW-exclusive Vertebrae33 edition limited to 600 copies. That is a serious collector spread, although thirteen covers also means buyers should choose targets carefully instead of trying to capture every radioactive lizard in the building.
Collector Watch: Godzilla fandom is global, loyal, and currently thriving. A horror-first reinvention tied to a new shared continuity gives this issue both reader heat and long-term franchise relevance.
2. PREDATOR VS. THE PLANET OF THE APES #1
Publisher: Marvel Comics
On Sale: July 29, 2026
Heat Level: First-ever franchise collision
Some crossover concepts require a five-page presentation. This one requires four words: Predator hunts talking apes.
Written by John Layman with artwork by Salva Espín, Predator vs. The Planet of the Apes begins when a deadly Yautja crashes into the world ruled by the apes. Marvel is billing this as the first time the two franchises have collided, instantly giving the issue a clear historical hook within both licensed-comic lines. The setup is simple, cinematic, violent, and completely understandable to anybody walking past the rack.
Six variants are listed for the $5.99 debut, but the biggest collectible factor is the crossover itself. Predator has already proven capable of generating heat opposite Marvel heroes, while Planet of the Apes carries decades of film, television, toy, and comic fandom. Retailers have also placed the issue among the week’s spotlight releases, signaling confidence that this is more than a novelty matchup. First meetings between major franchises are easy to explain, easy to display, and easy for casual fans to chase. No complicated continuity doctorate required. Predator sees ape. Ape sees Predator. Everybody chooses violence.
1. QUEEN IN BLACK #1
Publisher: Marvel Comics
On Sale: July 29, 2026
Heat Level: Full symbiote event overload
There was no dancing around this one. Queen in Black #1 is the heavyweight release of the week, and Marvel knows exactly how much collector gasoline it poured onto the fire.
Al Ewing and Iban Coello launch a major symbiote event built around Hela claiming the mantle of Queen in Black and commanding her own symbiote forces. Standing against her is Knull, the original god of the symbiotes, setting up a cosmic confrontation with direct ties to one of Marvel’s most commercially successful modern mythologies. The first issue arrives as an oversized $7.99 release, and Marvel’s current schedule confirms the July 29 on-sale date.
Now let’s talk collector chaos. Twenty-three variants are listed. Twenty-three! The lineup includes a True Believers blind-bag edition, a 1:100 Skottie Young virgin cover, a 1:500 J. Scott Campbell virgin incentive, and contributions from Ryan Stegman, Peach Momoko, John Romita Jr., and other major names. That amount of choice guarantees attention, but it also means not every standard cover will become scarce simply because the internet posts it seventeen times before breakfast.
The 1:500 Campbell is the obvious trophy, while the blind bags create opening-day excitement and social-media reveal potential. More importantly, this is the beginning of a central Marvel event featuring Hela, Knull, symbiotes, cosmic warfare, and multiple opportunities for surprise character developments.
This is the week’s biggest book, but discipline matters. Chase the cover you genuinely love, understand the ratio before paying the premium, and do not let fear of missing out put your electric bill into the Negative Zone.
This week’s list has everything a comic-shop junkie could ask for. Queen in Black brings the massive Marvel event energy. Predator vs. The Planet of the Apes delivers the crossover nobody knew they desperately needed. Godzilla returns to pure nightmare fuel. Feral celebrates a milestone with an emotionally dangerous team-up. Black Star, Nano, The Patron, and The Dirt Beneath the Devil give indie hunters legitimate opportunities to get ahead of the crowd.
The smartest move this week is balance. Secure the books you actually want to read, identify one or two calculated collector plays, and leave the twenty-cover completion mission to somebody with a larger storage unit and fewer responsibilities.
