Jordan Mechner’s LIBERTY Turns the American Revolution Into a Secret War of Smugglers, Spies, and Big Historical WEPA
WEPAAA, Crusaders! History class just got raided by smugglers, spies, secret agents, and the creator of Prince of Persia, so yeah… sit up straight, fam.
Oni Press and Magnetic Press are bringing LIBERTY to Kickstarter, a sweeping historical graphic novel from Jordan Mechner, with art by Étienne Le Roux and Loïc Chevallier. This is not your dusty textbook version of the American Revolution. This is the hidden, high-stakes story of the secret arms smugglers who helped keep the rebellion alive when the colonists were outgunned, outmatched, and basically running on hope, grit, and “somebody better have a plan” energy.
Set in 1776, LIBERTY follows Connecticut merchant and secret agent Silas Deane alongside French playwright Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais, the man best known for The Barber of Seville, but apparently also for moving like a revolutionary plug behind the curtain. While American forces struggled against British power in New York, Beaumarchais helped orchestrate a covert mission from Europe to send weapons and support across the ocean. That is not footnote history. That is cinematic, cloak-and-dagger, “why was this not already a movie?” history.
Mechner, known worldwide for Prince of Persia, Karateka, and The Last Express, has already carved out a serious lane in graphic storytelling, and LIBERTY looks ready to hit with that same blend of movement, tension, and human drama. Paired with the richly detailed work of Le Roux and Chevallier, this book is aiming for prestige graphic novel territory with boots in the mud and secrets in the bloodstream.
And with America’s 250th anniversary on deck, the timing could not be cleaner. LIBERTY reminds readers that revolutions are not won by slogans alone. They are built through risk, strategy, sacrifice, and people history forgets until someone finally kicks the door open and says, “Nah, tell the whole story.”
Along with the deluxe hardcover edition, Magnetic Press is also producing a Limited Collectors 250th Anniversary Edition, featuring a foil-stamped slipcase, ribbon bookmark, foil-gilded pages, and a signed-and-numbered bookplate from Jordan Mechner.
So yeah, Crusaders, this one has history, art, espionage, revolution, and collector energy all in one package. LIBERTY is not just revisiting the American Revolution. It is pulling back the curtain and showing the secret machinery that helped light the fuse.
