JUDGE DREDD: COMPACT CRIMES Brings 50 Years of Mega-City One Justice Down to Size

·Al Mega

Rebellion launches a new reader-friendly collection in January 2027, taking Judge Dredd back to his earliest cases in a compact format built for longtime fans and rookies ready to meet the Law.

Judge Dredd has spent nearly fifty years kicking down doors, handing out sentences and reminding Mega-City One that when he says, “I am the law,” he means every damn word of it. Now Rebellion is taking that massive legacy and shrinking the format without shrinking the attitude with Judge Dredd: Compact Crimes, a brand-new collection series launching January 26, 2027.

The new line will collect Dredd’s classic cases from the beginning and present them in chronological order, giving readers an easy entry point into one of British comics’ biggest and most influential characters. Rather than asking newcomers to figure out where to jump into decades of stories, Compact Crimes starts right at the beginning and lets readers ride shotgun as Mega-City One’s toughest lawman becomes the icon we know today.

Each trade paperback will arrive in a compact 210 × 148mm format, roughly 8¼ × 5⅞ inches, making the books easier to carry, collect and stack without needing Judge Dredd himself to issue a storage permit. The first volume will be priced at £9.99 in the UK and $12.99 in the United States, keeping the entry price low enough for curious readers who have always wanted to get into Dredd but never knew where to start. And fam, if you have somehow gone this long without properly diving into Judge Dredd, this is a hell of a place to fix that.

Volume One includes stories from legendary writers Pat Mills and John Wagner, with artwork from some of the biggest names in British comics history, including Brian Bolland, Mick McMahon, Ian Gibson and more. These are creators who did not simply contribute to Dredd’s world. They helped define the visual language, brutal satire and dark humor that made 2000 AD such a major force in comics.

Judge Dredd first appeared in the second issue of 2000 AD back in 1977 and quickly became the title’s breakout character. His adventures through the sprawling, violent, completely unhinged streets of Mega-City One have since expanded into decades of comics, novels, games and two feature films, including the 2012 cult favorite Dredd. Fifty years later, that helmet still fits just fine.

The timing of Compact Crimes is no accident either. February 2027 marks the 50th anniversary of 2000 AD, and Rebellion has already begun lining up special publications and events celebrating five decades of British comics madness. Judge Dredd has been right there for almost the entire ride, and bringing his earliest adventures back in an affordable new format feels like one of the smartest ways to introduce another generation to the character.

What makes this line especially cool is the commitment to collecting every case in order. There is no jumping around, no “start with volume 47 because somebody online said it gets good there,” and no needing a detective board covered in red string just to figure out chronology. You start with the early cases, move forward, and watch Judge Dredd, Mega-City One and the entire world around them evolve over nearly five decades of storytelling.

For longtime fans, Compact Crimes offers another way to revisit the material that built the legend. For newer readers, it strips away one of the biggest barriers that comes with any character carrying fifty years of history: figuring out where the hell to begin.

That answer is now pretty simple.

Start at the beginning. Grab Volume One. Enter Mega-City One. Try not to break the law.

Judge Dredd: Compact Crimes Vol. 1 arrives January 26, 2027, priced at £9.99 in the UK and $12.99 in the United States. The collection will be available through comic shops, bookstores and online retailers, with digital editions available through the official 2000 AD webshop and app.
