Savage Dragon Goes MASSIVE With a Shelf-Busting Compendium Built for Fin-Heads

Image Comics is going all-in on Erik Larsen’s legendary Savage Dragon with Savage Dragon Compendium, Vol. 1, a gigantic paperback collection that takes readers all the way back to the beginning and packs decades of early Dragon chaos into one shelf-bending brick.

The compendium collects The Dragon #1-5, including the expanded version of the original three-issue miniseries that helped launch Image Comics in 1992, along with Savage Dragon #1-44. That means readers get the early years in one shot without hunting down old back issues, dusty long boxes or piecing together multiple trades.

And these are not quiet years. Dragon battles Overlord and the Vicious Circle, gets dragged through an all-out gang war, helps stop the destruction of Earth, goes from cop to corpse and literally to Hell and back, and somehow keeps moving. The collection also includes the birth of Dragon’s son, the death and rebirth of Darklord, and Dragon’s rise to the head of the Special Operations Strikeforce.

Then come the guest appearances. WildC.A.T.s. Spawn. Hellboy. The Maxx. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Even God shows up. This thing is basically a time capsule from the wildest era of creator-owned superhero comics. Image Comics is also giving collectors a Direct Market exclusive variant that will only be available through comic shops.

Larsen’s Savage Dragon remains one of the longest-running full-color comic series produced by a single writer/artist, and the title is marching toward issue #300. For longtime fans, this is a ridiculous chunk of Dragon history in one volume. For readers who always wanted to jump in but never knew where to start, Image Comics just removed the excuse.
