SPAWN 77 GOES FULL COLLECTOR MADNESS WITH NEW TODD McFARLANE AND MARK SPEARS VARIANT COVERS

Todd McFarlane’s original 1977 Spawn design finally enters comic book canon, and Image Comics is stacking the debut with some seriously wild collector bait.

Wepa, Spawn collectors, Image Comics just turned up the heat on Spawn 77 #1, revealing two more variants for a debut already looking like somebody kicked open the vault and yelled, “Take my money!” The latest additions include a Mark Spears cover inked by Todd McFarlane and the 1:100 incentive featuring McFarlane’s original 1977 Spawn artwork. Yeah, that artwork. The one created years before Spawn #1 ever hit a comic shop.

The history behind this one is what makes it hit different. McFarlane first designed the character that would eventually become Spawn in 1977, when he was only 16 years old. Nearly five decades later, that teenage creation is finally making its official comic book debut in Spawn 77, a three-issue miniseries co-written by McFarlane and Mark Spears, with Spears delivering fully painted interiors.

And Image is not playing small with the variants. The lineup runs from standard covers by Spears, McFarlane and Emma Ríos all the way to a 1:25 retro logo, 1:50 McFarlane variant, the 1:100 original 1977 design, a 1:250 signed McFarlane foil, and the heavyweight 1:500 double-signed foil by Spears and McFarlane. Collector wallets everywhere just felt a disturbance in the Force.

Spears moving from red-hot cover artist into co-writer and fully painted interior storyteller makes this even more interesting. His horror-heavy visual style paired with McFarlane’s original Spawn concept gives the project something beyond nostalgia. This is not simply “remember this old sketch?” marketing. They are building a new character and story around the roots of the Spawn mythology while finally giving fans a look at where the whole damn monster started.

Spawn 77 #1 arrives in comic shops in September 2026 as an extra-length 64-page issue priced at $6.99, with digital editions also planned for Amazon Kindle, Apple Books and Google Play.

For Spawn fans, McFarlane diehards and variant hunters, this one already has all the ingredients: history, scarcity, Spears artwork, McFarlane signatures and the first official appearance of a Spawn design almost 50 years in the making.

Better start talking to your LCS now, Crusaders. That 1:500 ain’t gonna magically appear in the dollar bin.
